There is nothing that is more pleasing to be seen by the eye than an herb garden that is sitting down into the rich soil of the Earth and stretching its vibrant colored leaves up towards the skies. Herb gardens have been around since the 18th century and each one captures its very own essence and beauty. Herb gardens awaken the senses as you walk in your backyard over the fresh mowed lawn and take in the aromas that fill the air. Here is a list of several different ideas for a non-traditional herb garden for your backyard.

Butterfly Garden

This is a great way to attract butterflies of all colors and sizes into your backyard. There are many plants that attract butterflies and provide nectar. Here are a few to get you started.

Licorice Mint, Bee Balm, Hyssop, Curly Spearmint, Dwarf Blue Butterfly Bush, Zinnia, Mexican Sunflower and Purple Coneflower.

Gourmet Herb Garden

Any of these will add flavor and spice to meats, pastas and fish.

Vietnamese Cilantro, Pine scented Rosemary, Lemon Thyme, Garlic Chives and Tarragon.

Kids Herb Garden

Kids will enjoy their first experience of growing their own herbs.

Keep it safe and simple.

Chocolate mint, Lemon Balm, Chocolate Daisy, German Chamomile, Maraschino Cherry Salvia, Catnip and Lavender.

Bible Herb Garden

You will find many references to gardens, fruits, flowers and plants mentioned throughout the Bible. Even during Biblical times herbs were used a lot to add flavor as well as spice to foods.

Bay Laurel, Egyptian Mint, Lemongrass, Syrian Oregano, Aloe Vera, Cumin, Fennel, Chicory, Sweet Myrtle and Sage, Dill, Frankincense, Hyssop and Coriander.

Edible Flowers Herb Garden

Edible flowers are most often used in salads and as garnishes for many dishes. Flowers are rich in pollen and nectar and some have high amounts of vitamins and minerals. Just be sure that you know the type of flower you are eating is safe to eat and is non-toxic. There are some flowers that are not meant to be eaten so be sure and check with a professional before you grow your own edible flower garden. Flowers do contain pollen so if you suffer from allergies just remember this.

I love these ideas, Bandit. I'm bookmarking this one for sure. I cook with herbs, and I love the aroma when stepping outside. The fresher the better!

Great gardening ideas . . . I published a piece on AC a while ago on biblical herbs (Spices in the Scriptures: A Biblical History of Herbs and Seasonings). Growing these at home is a super plan, especially for teaching kids about the significance of each spice!

What a clever topic and I love all these ideas ~ I never thought about a "non traditional" herb garden, and I know it's something that my daughter would enjoy cultivating next year.
