Living in Atlanta can be a really nice thing. One of the things that I have come to love about this city is the wonderful selection of supermarkets. I recall having to grocery shop in the Bronx at one of the renowned grocery chains that the borough housed. I hated these experiences. The lines were always super long. The food was not always super fresh. And the prices were always super high. That was not my idea of a Super market. Upon moving to the South, and becoming acclimated to the shopping routines of this city, I realized that grocery shopping does not have to be a mind-numbing chore.

Further research brought me to the conclusion that two of my favorite supermarket chains in Atlanta are Kroger and Publix. After shopping at both chains for many years, I realized that there are some marked differences between the two. I am having trouble deciding which one is truly the better chain. So I have done a little research to find out which of the two, Kroger or Publix, is the best place to spend your hard earned grocery dollars.

AESTHETICS

Suffice it to say, all supermarket chains are not built or designed exactly the same way. But I will say that I have noticed that there is a discernible difference in the way these grocery stores are designed. The Kroger chain has a very wide-open appeal. The store doesn’t exactly have a no-frills look. But there is a very generic, and sterile allure. In most of the stores, the aisles are very wide. The products are always clearly marked. Kroger does a great job of keeping things very simple.

Publix, on the other hand is accented with splashes of its company color, what I like to call “sea-foam green.” I don’t know that I would have chosen this particular color for a supermarket chain. But I do know that the Publix food chain is a pretty impressive store from an aesthetic standpoint. Upon walking in, you are treated to a luxurious deli department and large, wide aisles. The stores are always brightly lit. And maneuvering around in them is never an obstacle course. In the category of aesthetic design, Kroger leaves just a little bit to be desired.

Kroger unlike publix is open 24 hours a day to searve customers. Publix does not feel it needs to serve customers after 10pm. Publix is also closed on every holiday you can think of. That is not customer service. Kroger cares about its costomers enough to be open all the time and on every holiday. Krogers meats and produce are the freshest ive ever seen. Usally publix has some old meat or very unfresh produce. They also have had many expired items still on the shelf. Thats whay I never shop at publix, always at my kroger.

Kroger is by far the best grocery store out there. Kroger greets you as you walk in and their staff is always ready to help. There motto about customer service is far over publix's. There prices are much better on everything compared to publix. There stores are clean and spotless. Why waste time and all that money at a store like publix??

You seem like a very bitter individual who lack checking your typo's. Before bashing a company make sure your English is great and people can follow along. I have been working for this company for over 15 years and in management and never saw any of these things occur or take place in ANY of the Publix I have worked for. The customers can be very nasty at times and they have the well mannered customers that we have to deal with. That includes the racist customers as well. So talked about demon managers and employees try the people who shop there that we have to put up with in the management position. Maybe some of them are you I have to deal with on a daily. Hope your shopping experiences continued to be pleasant.

Well Ron I have to agree with you on the way Publix treats their employees. My brother was a grocery manager for about 5 years. When he moved to Greater Atlanta and the new stores opened up or the old ones inventory went to hell. They would call on him to fix it, my brother does his job and does it will. I moved here about a a year and a half after him, in the 5 yrs I have been here my brother has been at least 6 different stores. They transfer him to a store about 4 months before inventory and went him to clean up the back room and so forth. I've been a grocery store manager and in that amount of time and that amount of stuff, is asking for a miracle. Especially if your vendor such as coke and so on have extra's sitting in the back or even out of dates. Then you get to chase down your sales rep so they can write you a credit so the deliver driver will take it. Will needless to say my brother did everything possible to be able to be promoted to assit. store manager. Will instead of giv

Yes Kroger does have self checkout lanes unlike publix where you might have to wait in line. My opinion I would rather talk to the human running that register if a question or problem occurs then to deal with a problem such as "wrong price" on a self checkout. The reason is because the person that is supposed to be watching the self checkout is either busy helping a cashier or is just there while the actually person is on break. Which means either way they don't have a clue to whats going on. Publix I think also gives off a warm feeling when you go into. The people at publix speak to you, even if it is to just let you know they seen you come in the door. I only drink publix brand instant tea for my sweet tea and I do mean nothing else will work. The store right across the street from my house ran out, I actually drove another 15 miles to get my tea jars. Although on my way home I stopped and gave the manager on duty the label and please order this there is none on the self. Come tues.

Publix where shoping is a pleasure but working there is hell!!

I admit Publix is a great store and has alot of good buys and are by far the cleanest stores iin the south east. The only store that compares to them is Tom Thumb stores. But publix has a bad side to them alot cant see, their worrking inviroment. Now before I start I'm not bashing publix im mearly telling the truth. Most managers or assistant managers turn into a demon for some reason when they get a title and treat their co-workers like crap. Publix has the worst record for working inviroment then any other store. My wife works for publix and dreads going to work and comes home everyday with a complaint. My mom woorked their too for 25 years(now retired) and has been transfered to every publix store in central florida and many stores in georgia also and has been a stock worker, assistant manager and a manager so she has seen it all. I am not going to take the time to tell all the horror stories that publix has, I would be here all night typing. My publix slogan: Publix where sho

I live in Chatanooga TN and the closest Kroger is in Dalton GA, a very fine store at that tho.. We have Publix and BiLo but I personally prefer Bi-Lo over Publix although Publix is cheaper on Produce.. I would be delighted to have a Kroger in the city again because its a long drive to Dalton's amazing store.. Until then I will have to settle for Bi-Lo because Publix is all hype in my experience

As I was saying, Kroger opened a new HUGE store about a mile from my house a few months ago. It is cleaner and much nicer than their old one. However, when I went to check out tonight (at 10:20 pm) I was told that there were NO lanes open. I would have to use the self serve checkout. WHAT? If a store is open it should have the staff to serve the customer. Contrast this with Publix: I did not load my cart right and smashed my loaf of bread. The cashier insisted on having the bagger go get me a new one. She would not let me purchase a loaf of bread that was crushed in the middle, even though I didn't ask her to and it was my own fault! They cheerfully do rainchecks for sale items that are sold out. The staff seems genuinely happy to be there at Publix, and when I shop there I am glad to be there too!

I shopped at Kroger and Publix tonight. Publix continues to be the Champion and EVER shall be! I would like to see some actual data from those who claim Kroger is less expensive. I find that Kroger has better dairy sales, and occasionally has a few sales worth the trip. However, Publix has BuyOneGetOne sales that in my area means half off. I regularly get cereal for $2 or less, I paid $1 tonight for 18 oz of Peter Pan peanut butter, $1.99/pound for boneless skinless chicken breast, and so forth. The produce prices in our area (middle Georgia) are invariably higher at Kroger and the produce is worse quality. Because I have a large family and a tight income I shop at SuperWalmart, Publix and if necessary Kroger for 10 items or less. I watch the ads, I do the math per ounce, etc. and Publix is unstoppable when they do Buy One Get One Free. Next topic is service and there is absolutely no competition. Publix IS where shopping is a pleasure. Kroger opened an extremely large stor

I also fell that Publix is very attractive to eye the customer service very pleasing and delightful.comming from Queens N.Y i was very pleased to find all the different ethnic food available to me and how fresh all the items appeared, however krogers in the other hand customer service is very bad there employees shirts looks dirty and there products looks as though there about to expire,is that why they have such great sales?.Really,I rather speand a bit more for the best than digest food that looks like there are about to expire...

Publix you are the best grocery store in the world. Your customer service is excellent. Your fresh foods are great. Not rotten like Krogers. Your stores are cleaner and your meat is tender. Kroger's meat is chewy and pricey. Wish we could get a Publix in our city witch is Cookeville Tn. I won't give up asking them to come to us. My gas mileage will be cheaper when we do get one.
