I was first introduced to the Hull line of vintage pottery when I received a set of Little Red Riding Hood kitchenware from my mother. Given to her by my father, she never cared for the set much and was eager to pass it on once one of her daughters was old enough to use it. The set included a cookie jar, large salt and pepper, a creamer, sugar, and a teapot. The Little Red Riding Hood line is actually said to be the most highly sought after line of pottery from any company made during the early part of that century, but especially so of the Hull Company. The Little Red Riding Hood line manufactured by the Hull Company in Crooksville Ohio had many more pieces than those passed down to me though, with many of them collectible even more so than some of the more common pieces..

A few of the more highly coveted pieces included a covered butter dish, a milk pitcher, and a hanging matchbox. Considering the years that this set was manufactured, in the 1940’s, a piece such as a matchbox that could be hung near the stove was not only useful, but also prone to being damaged, hence the collectibility of such a piece years later. The same could be said for the milk pitcher, manufactured during a time when fresh milk from the cow was as commonplace as is a gallon from the corner store today, and because it had a use in the kitchen day in and out, it also was prone to damage, making those that survived that much more sought after.

The Hull Company from Crooksville Ohio manufactured many different lines of pottery that went on to be collectible, including many art and utility lines sold through the years. I believe a big part of their popularity was drawn from the fact that many of their lines were not only pleasing to the eye, but also useful to those who owned them.

Takeaways
  • The Hull Company from Crooksville Ohio made many lines of pottery
  • he Collector's Ultimate Encyclopedia of Hull Pottery is a must for any serious collector
  • Little Red Riding Hood was their most popualr line of pottery

My grandmother bought a pair of vases for my aunt and uncle for their wedding in 1955 or 56. They have on the bottom--Hull with what looks like an R sideways and W4-6 1/2" U.S.A. There are pretty flowers on it and the handles are gold. Could you possibly tell me what the value would be on these for insurance purposes or are they not worth much except for sentimental reasons.
