Katie Holmes: New Hollywood Royalty?

In light of the recent nuptials between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes (otherwise known as TomKat), I have come to wonder why this ceremony has been dubbed the Wedding of the Year. Could it be because it took place in one of the world’s oldest (and rumored to be haunted) castles in Italy? Or is it because Tom Cruise, the most “celebrated” male actor in Hollywood has walked a “teen princess” down the aisle? Let’s take a closer look at the new Mrs. Tom Cruise, and see just what the appeal might be.

Born, Kate Noelle Holmes, Katie is most popularly known for her recurring role as “Joey Potter” on the WB network program “Dawson’s Creek.” I would be lying if I said that I did not tune in each week to see whether Joey and Dawson would end up together. But that is another story. The point is that America fell in love with this doe-eyed brunette teenager who spoke with the self-confidence of a 40-year old woman. That is perhaps the stuff that Mr. Cruise was attracted to in the beginning.

At any rate, Katie was born (2 months prematurely) for the stage. Taking the reins of her entertainment career like many other ambitious youths, she headed for Los Angeles to audition for films. I would love to know exactly how long it took the young lady to actually land what would be her first big role in 1997’s “The Ice Storm.” This was a brilliantly-filmed spectacle created by director Ang Lee. Katie’s role in the film was rather limited. But her adorable sex-appeal was a big hit with adolescent boys and young men.   Shortly after that, is when she ended up at the “Creek” on the WB.
