Does your little girl love to dance? Most girls do. They might even hit you up for special clothing and shoes to practice their dancing. That can get expensive, but one thing you can make that's cheap and fun, is a ribbon stick that girls can twirl and swirl.

Ribbon sticks are easy to make and they can be made in many different ways. To start, you'll need a dowel rod, or something similar. The dowel should be about twelve inches long and not too large in diameter.

Shop where birthday supplies are sold and purchase a roll of crepe paper streamers. The streamers are inexpensive and come in a variety of colors. The roll will make several of the ribbon sticks. The craft is simple. Cut the streamers into long pieces. Little girls will need a smaller section of streamers than a taller girl would need.

Cut several feet of the streamers and fasten one end of it to one end of the dowel. Tape or glue the streamer on, placing the width of the crepe paper against the length of the dowel, at the very end. Now wrap the streamer round and round the dowel and give it to your daughter for playing with while dancing. All she has to do is swing the stick around and the crepe paper streamers will swirl and twirl in the air.

You can often find the streamers in a plastic type of material. The lightweight plastic comes in many colors and is about the same size as the crepe paper streamers. They are attached in the same manner by gluing or taping the end of the plastic streamer to the end of the dowel.

Girls can make their own streamers by cutting up trash bags. Cut strips of the bags, tape the ends together, and continue doing so until the streamer is the size you need it to be. Attach it to the stick and roll it up. Now the little girl can dance and swirl the stick while having hours of fun.

Instead of using streamers you can also use ribbon. Wide ribbon, wrapped around the stick, can be used in the same manner as the crepe paper or plastic streamers. The ribbon should be lightweight and fairly wide. A different twirl stick is made by attaching many long, narrow ribbons on the end, but it's more difficult to wrap the ribbons around the stick before playing.

Takeaways
  • Girls that love to dance will love a ribbon stick they can twirl and swirl.
  • The stick is made by attaching crepe paper streamers to a dowel.
  • Cut strips of trash bags to make your own streamers.
