Marshall's Cornish Pasties in Grass Valley, California, offers local residents and visitors a taste of Cornwall, England, without having to go to the expense of boarding a plane and flying across the North Atlantic.

Origins of the Cornish Pasty

Cornish pasties (pronounced pas-tees) are a traditional English food that is thought to have originated in Cornwall. Tradition has it that Cornish pasties were invented for the convenience of miners who were not able to return to the surface to eat and also for farmers who were hard at work in the fields all day.

Traditional Ingredients

Cornish pasties are made from a short crust which is rolled into a round shape and then folded over to form a crescent shape once the filling has been added. The completed Cornish pasty is then sealed using a crimping action with the back of a fork. A traditional Cornish pasty is made with meat (usually steak or minced beef) chunks of potatoes and lots of hearty vegetables. What makes a Cornish pasty truly authentic is the thin pastry that encases the ingredients as well as a jam packed filling.

Did Marshall's Measure Up?

Before my husband and I arrived in Grass Valley, I mentioned that I wanted to buy some Cornish pasties this time round. We had heard of just one Cornish pasty shop. But we soon learned from a shopkeeper that there are two in Historic Downtown Grass Valley and that Marshall's was the best. We took the shopkeeper at her word and headed off to see what we would discover. Marshall's Cornish Pasties is located at 203 Mill Street, Grass Valley, 95945. The telephone number is (530) 272-2844.

When we first entered Marshall's Cornish Pasties, we were greeted by the owner and allowed to browse the menu before making our selection. We chose broccoli and cheese, sausage, beef and vegetable pastries, which cost a total of $18.00. At Marshall's, you have the option to sit down at a table to eat your order, or you can take it away with you. Marshall's Cornish pasties are made fresh each day and they contain no artificial preservatives or additives.

Great review but I prefer eating English food in England and it is closer to my hometown. For American people, this is a real good suggestion to eat this food in California

Nice that you were able to find a familiar "taste of home" without having to fly back to England to get it. That broccoli & cheese Cornish pasty sounds good!
