You finally decided to do it; you are going to follow your passion and become a writer.  You are going to make your life-long dream of putting pen to paper, (or in today’s world, fingers to keyboard), a reality.  Now that you have made it over that hurdle, you are faced with another one; how are you going to find these fabulous writing jobs?  Where do you look for them, and when you get one, how should you respond?

The good news is that there are a lot of options and opportunities out there.  The bad news is that there are a lot of other people vying for them.  One of the most important things to remember when you are looking for a writing job is to be diligent.  You have to look for them, search them out.  But, once you start looking, you will see how much work is out there.  The first thing you should do is run out, and I mean run don’t walk, to your local bookstore or library and get yourself the current edition of the Writer’s Market.

The Writer’s Market is the freelance writer’s bible.  They come out with new editions every year, so make sure you are getting the current year’s edition.  It contains listings of thousands of publications you can submit your work to.  The information they provide is invaluable because there are places you can submit to that you probably have never heard of.  In the book you will find, markets you can submit to, how much they pay, the website for the publication and who the exact person is that you should be sending your submission to.  For a nominal yearly fee, you can also subscribe to the Writer’s Market online.  They have all kinds of other tools you can use there.  They have things like a submission tracker, personalized market lists, daily updates and much more.
