Long before the Harry Potter, Batman and Bionicle sets dominated the Lego catalog there were more simple building sets. One series that was extremely popular was the Western theme that also incorporated the wild West sets. These sets inspired creative play and weren't as limited as the ones that have been released in the past three to four years. Accessory sets that contain figures are always a nice find; they allow you to add more to a scene, have more characters to develop and greatly increase the replay value of the entire series.

Lego Frontier Patrol
Series: Western
26 pieces - $5.99 - Set # 6706

Each of the three figures in the set have different facial expressions and details to them. This is a nice thing to come across because you can never have too much variety when it comes to mini figures. Their clothing is done up in a nice royal blue with modest stenciling and all three have hats that can be removed. This is strictly an add on type of set; unless you collect the figures or are trying to build up a small army there's no need to go overboard and buy a ton of these. When first introduced the set carried a $5.99 price tag but that has steadily increased since its 1997 debut.

Some of the more interesting accessory pieces include the dynamite stenciled tile, plastic calvary flag and metallic bugle. Weapons include two rifles, medium sized sword and pistol. The horse could be considered an accessory piece but I don't see it as one. It has fixed legs but the head can dip up and down. The saddle accommodates one standard sized figure and has pegs on both sides for weapons or tools. One of the redeeming qualities of sets like this is that the elements in it can be used with other standard sized figures so it helps to increase the replay value of larger or older sets.

Ever been to the Disney Studios' shopping and restaurant area in Orlando? They have some fantastic characters made totally out of Lego's there.
