When you begin to think about becoming a freelance writer, there are a lot of things you must do.  But, something you may not hear too much about, are the things that you shouldn’t do in the freelance business.  There are a lot of mistakes people make that can cost them thousands of dollars at the end of the year.  Along with that, there are also mistakes that writers make which can cost them writing jobs.

First and for most, you must never allow yourself to do any stinkin thinking.  Stinkin thinkin is that horrible, nasty little voice inside your head that tells you that you aren’t good enough.  You know what I’m talking about.  You’ve spent all day writing an amazingly creative children’s story, you are so excited about it that you woke up in the middle of the night to write out an outline so you could get started on it first thing in the morning.  After a day spent indulging in your childhood fantasies and putting it all together in your computer that little voice begins to tell you it just isn’t good enough.  “Don’t embarrass yourself by trying to submit this someplace, you’ll lose all credibility,” it says.  This is the type of thinking that will turn the next J.K Rowling into just another wannabe staring at an empty computer screen every day.  If you do manage to overcome that evil voice inside your head, and you start putting out great work that’s selling, always make sure to keep your deadlines.
