Many college students who are interested in the arts may consider pursuing a degree in film. This especially may seem appealing to people who are interested in theater but do not necessarily want to be actors. Is pursuing a degree in film really the right choice for you, however? Here are some of the different things that you should be sure to take into consideration before making the decision to obtain a degree in film.

Are You Passionate About Film?

The first and foremost thing that you will want to consider before earning a degree in film is whether or not you are really passionate about it. This is one field of study that you are going to need to be passionate about if you are really interested in finding future success. Keep in mind that there is a huge difference between simply being interested in film or enjoying it and being truly passionate about it. If you are not passionate about film, this may not be the right major for you. One good way to find out is to ask yourself if you can picture yourself doing anything else. If the answer seems yes and you picture better things, then film is not right for you.

Where Will You Earn a Film Degree?

Although it may seem insignificant at the time, it is important to consider where you will earn a degree in film. Since this is such a competitive field, the college that you choose to attend is going to make a difference. Choosing a college or university which is reputable for film, or at least for the arts, is very important. Ultimately, this can cause you to spend more money on school than you normally would with other degrees. While attending a community college is feasible for your first two years, transferring to a reputable school for film is important. Also, do not be afraid to take advantage of very reputable film schools, such as the New York Film Academy. Film schools often offer shorter programs and are very reputable.

This is true. I am taking a triple major so that I can do more than just one thing.

An excellent write. My nephew had a great passion for this all his life. He graduated college approximately 25 years ago. He has been very luck landing very good jobs in the field. He now works for Disney.

I actually started my college degree in film production and also drama, but it does not take too long to discover that you do not really care much about your field of study. Great article!

Good job! I'd opt for screenwriting myself, guess I still could. :-)

I would think that the studies would be a lot of fun but that it would be hard to find a job in film after graduation. You presented this nicely... a lot to think about.
