Budget conscious travelers hoping to beat downtown Chicago's high hotel prices may not be happy with the bargains they find if they end up in one of downtown Chicago's worst hotels. Exactly what qualities place a hotel on the worst downtown Chicago hotels list? It's debatable, but filth, hostility and danger will deter most travelers.

What are some of downtown Chicago's worst hotels according to guests who have stayed there? Consider Chicago Travelodge...

Is Chicago Travelodge Downtown the Worst Downtown Chicago Hotel?
65 E Harrison St

One guest of this hotel, reviewing it for yelp, objected to a lobby stinking like diarrhea and stains- euphemistically described as "protein stains"- on the bedding. Many other guests also complained that the hotel stinks, with the odor called sewage-like.

Writing on Trip Advisor, a man who stayed at Chicago Travelodge compared his visit to being in a Hopper painting, referring to Hopper's preoccupation with depression.

The hotel desk is behind one-way glass. The neighborhood of this downtown Chicago hotel has been described as in the process of gentrification: full of liquor stores and businesses with barred windows and a few blocks from a methadone clinic. One couple on their honeymoon complained of arriving to find beggars outside this hotel. Is it the worst downtown Chicago hotel?

One visitor to this hotel said the toilet flushed itself repeatedly for four hours during the night.

A Trip Advisor reviewer complained that the front desk responded to his request for more towels by saying that the hotel had run out and never responded to any of his 3 requests for toilet paper.

These conditions may very well be what prompted another guest to write, in his Trip Advisor review, "Only in your most desperate moments should you book a room here. I mean moments where, in order to survive the night, you should get rid of the gun and the hooker and get your ass to a meeting."

The hotel is described as having tiny rooms with poor temperature control, paper thin walls, elevators that barely work and large gaps between the room door bottoms and the floor.

Fun research. I wrote about Congress Hotel in my haunted hotel series. Al Capone owned it at one time and supposedly he still haunts the hotel.

I'm often tempted to take one of those special lights that show various stains on the sheets, etc...that can't be seen by the naked eye but then I think, "No, better not." I'm glad you pointed out some of the hotels worth avoiding.

I thought I had stayed in some crummy Chicago hotels, but these definitely trump my experiences.

Well written! I was compelled to keep reading even though I was getting more disgusted with each hotel and bad experience.

"This reviewer complained of a cockroach infested room with one cockroach falling from the wall and landing on him during the night." - I swear to God if this happened to me, I'd have raised mortal hell with everyone associated with the joint! Appreciate the heads-up on this. Repulsive!
