My top 10 classic rock and pop railroad songs talk about real and figurative trains. These top 10 classic rock and pop railroad songs have quite a range and conjure up lots of pictures in my mind of trains, of which collecting train toys and watching real life ones go by are two of my favorite pastimes. I think of trains in one way or another when I hear these personal favorite top 10 classic rock and pop railroad songs. What do you think of as you ponder my list? Railroads and trains used in songs are often symbolic of other things...

Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Railroad Songs About Trains Selection 1: Sixteen Tons by "Tennessee" Ernie Ford

This Number 1 smash hit of 1955 talks about the hard life of coal miners, but because trains are such a part of the coal mining industry, Sixteen Tons certainly reminds me of the long coal train convoys I see going through my home state of Wyoming, one of the world's greatest bastions of coal.

Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Railroad Songs About Trains Selection 2: Love Train, by The O'Jays

This chart-topping train song from 1973 is a call to the peoples of the world to come together in peace: if only there was a railroad that could unite folks in a world that's still full of racial, economic, and other problems. I really enjoy the fast-paced and sincere way it's sung by these R&B performers.

Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Railroad Songs About Trains Selection 3: MorningTrain (Nine To Five) by Sheena Easton

I find this Number 1 hit song from 1981 to be friendly and gaily sung by Sheena Easton. To me, it sounds like something you'd hear in a Broadway play. But this train song was also used effectively in a Seinfeld episode called "The Butter Shave", where the scheming George Costanza fakes being handicapped and gets a motorized cart from his employer, which this train song underscores that aspect of the episode.

Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Railroad Songs About Trains Selection 4: Downtown Train by Rod Stewart

One of my top 10 classic rock and pop railroad songs about trains is about the now defunct Rock Island Railroad.

Good piece. I would have included "Melissa" by the Allman Brothers and "Peace Train" by Cat Stevens to make it an even dozen.
