Guess what is the greatest movie ever made? Aw, okay, you already guessed from the title. According to the distinctly unreliable voters whose rating decides which movies make and don't make the IMDB Top 250 list, The Dark Knight is better than Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Raging Bull, Dr. Strangelove and Schindler's List. It is even better than the movie it, doubtlessly briefly, toppled from its longstanding position as the greatest movie ever made: The Godfather. Of course, the fact that this incredibly sweet and thoroughly unrealistic portrayal of life in the Mafia has held the number one position atop the IMDB Top 250 should be enough to convince anyone that the unscientific poll is a joke. Heck, I wouldn't even place The Godfather on my top five list of gangster movies.

But there you go.

The Dark Knight is unquestionably a powerhouse superhero movie. Even if it weren't snugly fit into that genre, this Batman movie would be impressive. The fact that it can be compared to such tripe as the X-Men movies and the previous Batman movies made between Tim Burton's original and Batman Begins as well as the other great superhero movie series of our time, the Spiderman trilogy, certainly lifts The Dark Knight into realm of its own. But the immediate acceptance by 23,611 IMDB movie raters, as of this writing, as the greatest movie of all time is simply astounding.

As I said to you in email last week, that #1 position was probably the result of a psychological high by those who don't mind dressing in Joker makeup and sleeping on a sidewalk for three days waiting to get in and see the film. This was the most highly-anticipated superhero film arguably of all time after all and immediate reaction was probably equivalent to someone eating ten bags of M&M's all in one sitting. With that in mind, I surprisingly forgive the #1 designation on the IMDB Top 250, because we know it's temporary. Even so, it's downright eerie to see a marketing machine that would will people to vote that miles above "The Godfather", "Casablanca" and every other classic you can name that seem to be sinking as slow as the Titanic on the list as each year goes by. Not that the IMDB Top 250 should be relevant anyway. Anything at that site that involves the public can't be taken seriously, and I hope most educated people feel the same way. For general info, though, it's tops...

Like you, I feel time will help this one find its place in cinematic history. I'll look forward to your review as well as perhaps a heads up if you happen to see this comment - as there seems to be a temporary glitch. Although the two died in vastly difference circumstances and historical periods, there seems to be a James Dean factor at play here (not to take anything away from Ledger's performance) and those who die before a movie is released have their performances interpreted differently with that loss in mind. Perspective comes in time. I hope you note why the pencil trick was so effective and caught the audience unawares, filling the internet searches lately.

For me, this is the end of Imdb, finally. Or at least, the Dark Knight rating puts Imdb in its place, permanently. It can not be salvaged anymore.
