I was watching Comedy Central and they were replaying "The Blue Comedy Tour Rides Again," which is a good thing, because this time, on its (oh, I don't know) 500th lap around the network, I finally got to see Ron White's performance. I had somehow missed Ron White's and Bill Engvall's performances the other 75 or 80 times I'd seen the show (yes, I do have a lot of free time to kill -- and do other things), but not this ride. I had seen Jeff Foxworthy perform without his 5th grade entourage (he's funnier without those difficult questions interrupting his jokes) and Larry the Cable Guy's "git 'er done" routine, but had missed Ron White (which is inexcusable, really, considering all the free time I have -- I think I mentioned that...), who happens to be, in my humble opinion, one of the funniest comedians I have ever seen.

(Well, except for George Carlin, Bill Cosbly, Chris Rock, Richard Pryor, Steven Wright, Lewis Black, Wanda Sykes, Dennis Miller...)

Ron (I hope you don't mind me calling you Ron, Mr. White) is introduced by Bill Engvall (I hope you don't mind, either, Mr. Engvall, that I call him "Ron") and he comes out on stage, regular cigar and drink-in-glass in hand, and immediately, without any fanfare, begins making fun of the Chinese space program. And he really shouldn't have, because at least the Chinese are trying. But I digress... Ron White launches (pun totally intended -- I hate it when people don't take credit for their stupid "unintended" puns) into his schtick, which is very funny and has only a couple of rehashed jokes from his earlier routines (gotta keep the regulars happy, you know).

(...Rodney Carrington, Dave Chapelle, Denis Leary, Patton Oswalt, Bobcat Goldthwait, Christopher Titus, Bill Maher, David Spade...)

That last guy, Bat, sadly, is getting less popular every day. It's gotten so bad that on January 20 of next year, he's retiring from his full-time gig. On that day, I'll be watching the next clown get sworn in -- I'm getting my beabag and cheetohs ready as we speak....

Heh, I like Ron White, too; just the other day I was sitting naked in a beanbag chair eating Cheetos, watching the 458th showing of his half-hour special and thinking that hearing about how his rich wife made a comforter out of dryer lint never gets old and wondering if I, too, have an inordinate amount of time on my hands. Anyway, I agree with your list of funny people, except I've never heard of that last guy... :)

Actually, Bill Engvall has his moments, but he's not one of my favorite comedians. (I was just poking fun at Ron through association.) I like him. I like his show. I think he's far funnier when he has someone to play off of, like the guys on the Blue Collar Tour and on his television show, but his standup is almost like hanging out at my buddy's garage and drinking a beer while watching a game...

Ron White is hilarious but he often does the same lines. I like Jeff Foxworthy but he has gotten too big and sometimes his jokes are stupid. I have only heard Bill Engvall a few times. Loved the write up since it went along with the theme. another great article.

Agreed about fathers, Rick. But I love Ron White. I was just kidding about some of those guys being funnier than he is (to me). But I have an eclectic taste in comedians, as you can see...

I"m a big Ron white fan, too! Hilarious write-up!

Very stylishly done; White is only marginally funny, certainly no Foxworthy at his best, although he is surely funnier than Letterman, who is not funny at all and most recently annoyed the hell out of me by casually condescending to the singer Nicole Atkins, whom I hold in very high esteem. However, Ron White is funnier than my father as well; Dad's contribution to humor was pretty much limited to laughing at exactly one remark I made as a teen. (Travelling to a relative's very well-hidden home in the hills, I suggested that "Uncle Jack must have found this place by throwing a dart at a map." Big yucks, surely.) Most males don't find their fathers funny. RS
