Green Gulch Farm Zen Center (also known as Green Dragon Temple) was recently featured on CBS News, Sunday Morning edition. You can get some basic info about that show here: www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/07/20/sunday/main4275892.shtml . I was interested in Green Gulch Farm, being no stranger to meditation and Zen experiences.

For those unacquainted with the Zen Center at Muir Beach, Green Gulch Farm offers California residents and tourists a chance to get introduced to a radically different way of thinking, acting and living in the world, one that doesn't focus on money. For those who actually live there, it can be quite an adjustment (as some people there noted) since the emphasis is on living a life without spending or shopping obsessively - or many of the habits that fill the day of the average person.

Imagine a day without endless emails to answer, faxes to send, conferences and all the routine that makes up the usually chaotic existence of life. Imagine dropping out and actually spending daily part of the day simply sitting and meditating. Some people see meditation as "doing nothing". Others realize that it can be one of the most vital things that one does in the course of a day.

Green Gulch Farm, a Buddhist retreat that offers an escape from the pressure to keep buying things and the consumer culture

Green Gulch Farm is located in a green valley near Muir Beach. Instead of the constant hum of computers or fax machines, you are more likely to hear the chant of Buddhist prayers, see gardens filled with flowers and vegetables and even get an opportunity to learn more about life there. Visitors are welcome. If you want to know more about that, check out the Green Gulch Zen information here at their website: www.sfzc.org/ggf/ where you can learn about programs open to the public or simply find out more about this special place.

Mickey - I'm not sure how to contact you since you commented without signing in here. However, I'll offer these suggestions: either check the links in the article or in the resources section to the left of the article and call the center and speak directly to people at the center. While I could answer your questions to some degree, I think you'd be best helped by those running the center. I do know that visitors are welcome to come and go, of course, but the requirements for living there and transitioning to that lifestyle are best answered by those already doing so. I do not live there.

oh, and as a resident, are you able to leave the temple and go somewhere else? Thanks again!

Sounds like a very interesting place. I watched the CBS video but it leaves a lot of questions to be answered. You seem to be very well aquainted with the place, so I was hoping you could answer them for me. can anyone become a resident there if they are willing to engage in the buddhist practice? Also, if you become a resident, are you able to use any technology? I saw on the video the woman was able to use a computer, but can you listen to music or use a cellphone? Thanks for your time, and hope to hear back from you.

Great stuff, we have been really making adjustments as far as self-sustainability (wife is going to school for it) and might check out the place in Indy as we are near. Thanx

Sounds like something I'd love if I could only get there! I think the money chase in our culture gets ridiculous...this is such a great way to counter that!

Sounds like a great place to go except for the no talking to people thing. I love to meditate amd I can give up my computer for a couple of days, but people are too interesting not to talk to them.
