"Have you tried mineral make-up?" a kiosk sales girl gushed to me as I walked through a local mall one day. In my head I thought, "No, not really. My skin is really sensitive and can get oily, so I just stick to liquid, drug store brand foundation. Plus I'm kinda cheap." But instead, I just said, "I'm not interested, thanks," and breezed past her. However, I didn't get away that easily. After traveling a mere ten feet, another chipper girl approached me about a different mineral make-up that she was peddling. Unable to escape this time with the 'not interested' excuse, I listened to her sales pitch with as much attention as I could muster.

"Its only one hundred dollars for the whole kit," she exclaimed, "and trust me, its worth it." I looked in my wallet, five dollars. "I'm sorry," I said politely, "but I'm low on cash, next time." I saw my exit and quickly made a dash for the pretzel stand. In the distance I heard the sales girl yell, "We take credit card!" But it was too late, I'd already made up my mind. I wasn't going to spend a hundred dollars on make up when I could barely afford groceries for the month. But as I strolled through the mall, eating my getaway pretzel, I got to thinking. Mineral make-up is all the rage now days and yet a make-up junkie like me had never tried it. Why was I so afraid to try something new?

When I got home, I did some research. I didn't want to break the bank but I wanted to get the whole mineral make-up experience. I decided to test two of the more affordable and popular brands, i.d. bareMinerals, by Bare Escentuals Beauty, Inc., and Sheer Cover, by Guthy-Renker. Both companies have infomercials that are hard to miss and have rave reviews from their customers. After a few pep talks and some budgeting, I decided to try both products and see what all the fuss was about. I ordered both starter kits on line through each company's respective sites and here are the results...
