Working Online Part 2: Focus Groups - Focus groups are another way of online earning. It is an area that I'm not too terribly familiar with as yet, as I am to begin my first one in just a few days, but I'll share with you what I do know. The idea and concept look interesting, and I am looking forward to it.

What is a Focus Group?

A focus group is a research method similar to surveys, but is usually conducted with a small number of people who have similar interests. For instance, the one that I will be participating in is about what I eat every day, why I ate it, when I ate it, and where I purchased the things I ate.

In a focus group, a leader directs the discussion to cover a variety of issues related to the topic being researched. They are usually held at a physical location in a particular demographic area that the company is interested in determining their sales, although there are some good focus group companies online, as well as by telephone and mail. I personally opt for the online studies or those that are mailed out. Dallas is a scary place, and I prefer not to drive there if I can avoid it!

What's involved?

Focus groups will vary from area to area, basically determined by the usual demographic questions that are asked during a survey. If a company in your area or even a nationwide company is interested in the buying practices in your area, you will be screened to see if you qualify. It is imperative that you answer screening questions truthfully. If you do not, companies will "red flag" you, and you will not be contacted again. You don't want this to happen! We're here to make money, remember? We can't make money if it's determined that we cannot be truthful, and trust me; marketers do talk to one another and keep track of these things.

Focus groups usually only occur about every six months in any given area. That doesn't seem like much, so I have a feeling that one big study can be helpful to many products. I wouldn't quote me on that, though. With the ever increasing amount of products, systems, and technologies available these days, you would think that marketers and researchers would be beating down our doors!

Good article, thanks! I've participated in a few focus groups, and have been pleased with the experience.
