You think that during the summer your child would keep weight off, or even shed a few pounds. That used to be true. In the modern age of television, movies, electronic games and computers, children are spending more and more time sitting - and being sedentary.

Inactive children gain weight quickly. During the summer, their rate of weight gain is double that of the rest of the year. Why are American parents facing this alarming fact? Most parents are not able to keep their kids moving and exercising as much as they do during the school year. Kids also have access to any foods that may be in the home. Many school districts now fight obesity by offering only healthy foods. Snacks and junk foods have been eliminated from the cafeteria. Children are also in a fitness program through physical education or a sports team. Now can you see why our children are more physically fit while school is in session?

The problem is clear. You need to structure your child's activities and keep her going. How can you do that?

Limit television. Your child may throw a fit but it's for his own good. Shut the television off. You now have taken away the problem of food commercials enticing your child to eat all things unhealthy. Believe it - advertising is targeted towards your child's innocent mind. The youngster has no idea about marketing campaigns and the power of suggestion, and advertisers are there to make a profit.

Walk. Walking is truly the best exercise. There is no bouncing or strain on the joints, it's easy to do and the entire family can spend time together. Create a new tradition by walking daily with your child. You can also incorporate walks into family outings to the park, short day trips or site-seeing around the neighborhood. It's amazing what you can find when you look and walking offers lots of time to check out the scenery.

Did You Know?
Children gain twice the weight during summer months due to being sedentary and eating unhealthy foods.
