For a beach theme bedroom, surfboards create an easy accessory idea. This vintage surfboard headboard project is very easy to create and is also very whimsical when finished.

For this project, you will need:

- Two vintage surfboards

- Electric saw

- Plywood

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Blue Ocean Breeze

- Heavy duty adhesive (such as Gorilla Glue)

- Cordless drill

- Heavy duty bolts

- Measuring tape

- Carpenter's pencil

- Medium grit sandpaper

- Soft cloth

Measure and mark the plywood to a shape that is three inches wider on both sides than your mattresses and thirty six inches tall. With an electric saw, cut the plywood. Gently sand the plywood with medium grit sandpaper, taking extra time around the edges. Wipe away any excess dust with a soft cloth.

Spray both sides of the piece of plywood using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Wait fifteen to twenty minutes before adding a second coat of primer. Allow the primed plywood to dry for several hours. Add three to four coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Blue Ocean Breeze. Dry overnight.

With the electric saw, cut off both ends of the two vintage surfboards so that they are thirty inches tall apiece. Discard the middle portions. Sand the cuts with medium grit sandpaper so that they are completely smooth. Wipe away any dust from sanding.

Line up the surf board ends so that they are next to each other in a horizontal line on the painted plywood. (You should not see the edges of the plywood as the boards should be somewhat hanging over the side.) Adhere the board ends to the painted plywood with a heavy duty adhesive. Dry overnight. (Hint: This will take a lot of glue. Wipe away any excess with a damp paper towel.)

Drill two holes in the bottom three inches of the plywood. (On in the left corner; one in the right.) Secure the plywood to the wall above the bed with heavy duty bolts in these holes. (You should not see the bolts as they will be covered by your top mattress.)

Push the bed frame and mattresses up against the headboard. Arrange any pillows or bedding so that it appears the surf boards are sticking out above them.

Takeaways
  • Consider spray painting the surf boards prior to starting.
  • You should not see the edges of the plywood as the boards should be somewhat hanging over the side.
  • Arrange any pillows or bedding so that it appears the surf boards are sticking out above them.
