A loved one suffers a massive heart attack. You child is stung by a bee and is now having an allergic reaction. Your husband, while working on his "honey-do" list falls off the ladder. Would you know what to do in any of these situations? A first aid or CPR training course will give you the confidence and ability to handle these situations in a calm manner.

Courses Available

A good place to start is with the American heart Association. The AHA has a variety of courses available from the first aid and CPR course for the average individual to courses for the medical professional. Course available for the average person include the CPR Anytime for Family and Friends. This course is a self directed CPR course that can be taken in the convenience of your own home. This kit contains an inflatable mannequin and an instructional DVD. The course is designed to be completed in under 25 minutes.

Another excellent course offered by the American Heart Association is the Infant CPR Personal Learning Program. With this course, you will learn what to do if your child is choking and the basics of infant CPR. This course would be excellent for families, birthing classes or babysitting classes. Like the CPR Anytime for Family and Friends, this is a self directed course. The American Heart Association also offers traditional instructor based courses. Go to their website for information to help you pick a course that is right for you and also where you can take a course locally.

As a Self-aid and Buddy Care instructor in the Air Force, I taught a lot of this info to fellow military members. Having the knowledge and practice dealing with these situations could save someone's life. These courses are definitely worth taking! Thanks for the excellent list of available first-aid courses.

Good article, Ray, My problem is that despite several basic first aid classes and yearly recertification in CPR, I worry that I will not have the tools to do the job or that it will all fly out of my brain the second I need it. Still, it's better to have it and hope your brain remembers what you learned than to be clueless.
