Downtown San Diego Chows on the Cheap
Embed:
There are loads of attractions here in and around Downtown San Diego that spending a big chunk of your budget on restaurant dining during your visit here seems silly. Below is my list of a few cheap-ish eateries in Downtown area for those who eat to live rather than live to eat. There is little to no 'service' at most of these places:Horton Plaza Food Court (4th Floor):
Horton Plaza is the psychedelic colored shopping mall that occupies 3 square blocks in Downtown San Diego (bordered by 1st Avenue, Broadway, 4th Avenue, and G Street). The lay-out is quite irregular, but the easiest way to get to the 4th floor food court is by the elevator (one car on northeast and southeast ends of the building). There are many varieties of food you can choose from (Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Greek, Mexican, burgers, ice-cream, hot dogs, etc), with dining area in the middle of the floor. The food court is flanked by a movie theater to the north and a bookstore to the south.
Breakfast & Sandwiches:
The Cheese Shop: 627 4th Ave. (Gaslamp Quarters)
The best breakfast place in Downtown. Period. It's easy to overlook this little place squeezed right into the wall between the Dueling Pianos and Hooters', but well worth keeping an eye out for. Good portion size. Fresh ingredients. Wonderful breakfast selections.
Artisan Bread: 730 Market St. (East Village)
This relatively new eatery offers fresh bread and deli for breakfast and lunch at a neighborly price. Clean dining facility just a few blocks north of Petco Park.
Dirty Dell's:
499 10th Ave (East Village)
At the corner of 10th and Island, this is a deli place to hunt for a killer pastrami sandwiches on fresh bread after watching a Padres game at Petco Park.
Burgers:
The Waterfront: 2044 Kettner Blvd. (Middletown)
This joint is a bit out of the way in Middletown (between the Airport and Downtown) if you're on foot. It's easy enough to get to by Trolley (blue line) from Downtown, though. You won't find better burger and fries in relax atmosphere than you would here. It's close to the Trolley line. The price is actually 'moderate' (lunch of burger and fries with soda for around $15).
