Star NFL defensive end Jason Taylor has been traded to the Washington Redskins for a second-round draft pick in 2009 and a sixth-round draft pick in 2010. Jason Taylor is 33 and has 117 sacks in 11 seasons. Throughout last season Taylor has been rumored to be near the end of his playing career. He is more than capable of putting up pro-bowl quality numbers for several years but the opportunity costs of playing football over pursuing other opportunities in life may be too high to keep him in the game. Jason Taylor was a star on Dancing with the Stars and could possibly pursue a television and/or movie career. Taylor was highly criticized for his participation in the highly popular tv show instead of attending workouts with the rest of the Miami Dolphin team.

Washington made the trade on the same day that there starting defensive end Phillip Daniels was injured and is possibly out for the season. The Redskins paid a high price for Taylor in giving up two draft picks. If Taylor stays more than one year then this is a very good deal for Washington, but if he retires this was an expensive rental for the Redskins. The Dolphins are still in rebuilding mode and can use all the draft picks they are able to acquire.

Both teams may have made a significant move to improve their football teams. The Redskins for their immediate future and the Dolphins to help the long and grueling task of rebuilding a suffering NFL franchise.

Takeaways
  • Jason Taylor was traded to the Washington Redskins for two draft picks.

I hope Jason isn't under the false impression in my view that they can win this year. Daniel Snyder should try and cajole Cowher into coming back and offer Zorn the OC job for next year as a consolation prize.
