The cell phone company Boost Mobile has always based its advertising campaigns around the hip hop generation. On top of that, the main goal of the company is to get people talking about the company by any means necessary. The weird, the different, the taboo and more are not off-limits when it comes to the Boost Mobile company and its "Where You At?" ad campaign aimed at capturing the youth demographic with its phone service and its quick-strike communication abilities.
One of the more recent Boost Mobile "Where You at?" ads features three rappers each giving verses in the commercial in succession.
The first rap is from Jermaine Dupri, who is the significant other of Janet Jackson and is a big-time producer in the rap industry who also has been known to drop a few verses and/or even albums.
The second rap is by Young Jeezy, who is a pretty well-known albeit new on the scene and is a one of the younger generation's favorite hip-hop artists.
The third one, however, is someone who likely caused several viewers eyeballs to pop out of their sockets. In this ultra-smooth, ultra-macho rap video, the third rapper pops up and looks completely out-of-place from the get-go. He wears tight jeans, a sparkly belt, and has makeup on his face as well as long hair.
The first time I saw this commercial, I remember laughing out loud. His rap was a boastful verse that sounded downright ridiculous coming from such an odd-looking person.
Many people who saw the commercial had no idea that this stereotype-shattering rapper was actually fairly well-known, at least in the Los Angeles area. Many of them didn't even know if he was a man or a woman.
Through a little investigation, it's easy to find out that the rapper is Mickey Avalon from Hollywood, California. Avalon has led a difficult life that includes a heroin addiction and a turn to prostitution in order to pay off his bad and costly habit. Many of Avalon's songs deal with his problems of substance abuse. His songs also use a lot of humor as a way of dealing with his problems within his raps.
