The hard rocking, devil-may-care Australian band AC/DC announced back in April that rumors were indeed true that they would be releasing a new album, called "Black Ice," in late 2008, the first album from the band in eight years. For die-hard AC/DC fans, this was great news. It seems that AC/DC fans have been getting quite a bit of good news this past year...It all started back in October of 2007 when the band appropriated acdc.com from the porn merchants that owned it. It seems that AC/DC's demographic had changed considerably and with a multitude of younger fans, they at least had to make certain that the first thing the younger fans saw when they accessed acdc.com was Angus Young and Brian Johnson, not a young anus and someone's johnson. The site was up and running just in time to promote their latest release, "Plug It In," a five DVD set of live concert footage and video spanning their hard rocking career.
And then "Plug It In" hit No. 1 on the Billboard's Top Music Videos chart at the end of October, shipping 500,000 copies.
On December 13, 2007, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified 1980's "Back In Black," the group's tribute to former lead singer Bon Scott (who died in 1980), 22 times platinum. At the same time, RIAA reported that "Plug It In" had went 5 times platinum (in eight weeks). "Plug It In" topped the sales charts in twelve countries worldwide.
Just the week before, the website introduced an idea for content called Blow Up Your Video (also the name of one of their albums), encouraging fans to send in videos through YouTube of themselves performing AC/DC songs. These fan videos would be placed alongside actual AC/DC videos and photos on the site. On Valentine's Day, 2008, acdc.com announced that nearly 250 videos had been uploaded onto YouTube. And they are still being uploaded...
