Film remakes are something most of us either look forward to gladly, with some hesitation or with out and out trepidation. The bigger, more popular or classic the film is the bigger the risk of the new version being rejected by an audience that refuses to accept new actors taking over beloved roles or changing favorite storylines. Tim Burton'sPlanet of the Apes re-imagining comes quickly to mind. It may have earned some decent money, but by and large it was mostly rejected by fans of the classic original. When the original movie is smaller or even a cult favorite, the risks are less, however filmmakers should still tread carefully. There are dozens of high profile films we’d love to see redone, but for now I want to touch upon the more obscure or smaller productions.
Here's a list of a few favorites of mine that I'd love to see redone.
1. Blacula (Horror)
Yes, I know, the name sounds, well ridiculous. But that’s basically where the silliness ends. A 1970’s blaxploitation horror film that doesn’t ever exploit the subject matter nor the excellent actors who flesh out the intriguing story. The premise: What if an African prince and his bride were turned into vampires by a sadistic Count Dracula? Blacula fairly drips in 70’s camp and atmosphere, but again somehow the material and the actors rise above the low budget limitations and turn in a truly memorable horror outing. I’d love to see a true heavyweight actor like Denzel Washington or Laurence Fishburne take the role that William Marshall (Pee Wee’s Playhouse) made classy and fun, enabling a whole new generation a reason to shout:
Blacula – Deadlier Than Dracula!
2. Rikki-Tiki-Tavi (Animated)
