A recent story in the news reports Charles Rangel proposing legislation attempting to reinstute a military draft for those men and women 18 to 42 years of age.  A cnn.com story quotes Rangel as stating "There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way".  Rangel insinuates that a draft would scare congress into not launching wars if they knew their own children were fighting and this will in turn deter future wars from occuring.   However Rangel goes on to state that troop levels are insufficient to complete the necessary tasks in Iraq and to launch a preemptive war with Iran.  Rangel states  "If we're going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can't do that without a draft".   From this statement, Rangel seems to be saying that it's okay to fight these wars and continue down a path of solving political conflicts through military conflict as long as everyone is forced to go to battle.  This is utterly ridiculous.  Although I think the war in Iraq was a mistake, I don't think we should send more people, rather we should bring our troops home. If Vietnam taught us one thing, it is that forcing troops to fight unpopular wars authorized by politicians is not the solution.

Takeaways
  • The corruption that exists in congress
  • That the draft would do no good and neither would war
