For many years my family has eaten Thanksgiving dinner around lunch time and then when dinner time comes around if we still have room for anything we will have leftovers. I imagine many of you do the same thing. But this year I encourage you to do something different. This year you should all get up in the morning and your family should eat breakfast together around the table. Then you should save your big turkey dinner until the evening. Why do I think you should make sure to have breakfast together? Well Thanksgiving is a time of being thankful, sharing, and love. And breakfast, well, breakfast over the years has been lacking all those things. Need proof? Just look at all these things we’ve learned from breakfast.

Leggo My Eggo
I’m sure you all remember the Eggo Waffle commercials. But if you don’t remember every Leggo commercial started off with someone making an Eggo Waffle or two. They would leave their plate for a second to get syrup or something rather and then someone else would be lured there by the scent of the waffles. Sort of like in cartoons when someone leaves an apple pie on the window sill. This person would sit down to eat the Eggo and the original owner of the Eggo would come back and say “Leggo my Ego!” Now, there are several things wrong with this picture and I’m not even going to get into the improper English part. First of all, when is it ever ok to sit down at someone else’s meal and just start eating, this isn’t an A1 sauce commercial. Maybe this very hungry fellow would be successful if he stopped and asked the owner of the Eggos, “Greetings and Salutations, I am very famished and I was wondering if I could partake in this meal with you.” But on the other hand the owner of the Eggos could’ve been a little bit nicer. Instead of yelling maybe he could’ve shared his breakfast. The Eggo commercials are clearly teaching us greed and rudeness.

My breakfasts are soooooo not traditional. I eat spaghetti, soup, sandwiches, rice pilaf... The only one of those breakfast foods you mentioned that I've ever tried is Fruity Pebbles. I've never had a bite of any of the others. Guess I was deprived. :(

Good article. We never got to eat that stuff, but I remember the commercials. I think breakfast is very important and agree with you. I wasn't bored once in this article, thanks!

Our family tradition has been to make Pillsbury cinammon or orange danish rolls for breakfast. We eat them while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Then I spend the rest of the morning getting the rest of the meal prepared. We eat about 12:30, then I take a nap, then I finish cleaning up the mess that hubby didn't do. I agree, breakfast is important! Now leggo my eggo so I can have breakfast with Barney! :D

I save the marshmallows for last. Funny, but I suddenly have a craving for a leprechaun, I mean his cereal.

I loved this trip down memory lane. Oh the innocence of childhood. I didn't "get" any of these messages of selfishenss, greed and theft as a child, but now that I'm an adult, I can see your point! :) Seriously though, I always held out hope that the Cocoa Puff bird would somehow be able to hold it all together, JUST ONCE and not go Cukoo for Cocoa Puffs.

I always was waiting to witness the Trix rabbit's shot at redemption, but it never came. Deep down inside I wanted him to ascend a mountain of slewn children and pour an entire box of Trix over his head, like a fountain of sweet, sweet come-uppance.

In the subliminal are we reading too much into this? I grew up in a very healthy atmosphere, and as a child I never read anything about these wonderful commercials except a break time from reality, can anyone honestly tell me that in your childhood that The Rabbit had any evil intentions or subliminal messages? We live in a world of intangibles and choices, children of young ages need instruction and guidance to separate the difference between good and evil, indifference and fun.

True Teresa, Fred has always been kind of annoying and obnoxuios while the much cooler and nicer Barney is in his shadow. But think about poor Pebbles, she will never get to play with her daddy again after Barney slaughtered him with a club. And no doubt Barney is going to jail, Bam Bam is going to have some major father issues.

I must come to the defense of Barney Rubble. After all those years of Fred's scene stealing yabba dabba do's it's about time Barney got some backbone and stood up for what is rightly his!

Another good article Lee. I'll never look at breakfast cereal the same way again.

I have (mostly) fond childhood memories of eating breakfast while sitting on the living room floor, watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade... do they even show that on TV anymore? (Yes, I suddenly feel old.)

OKay, after this and the wal mart article, I am totally signing up to be your buddy. You rock!

Very good, Lee. I quite enjoyed this one. I'm happy to say that my son has never seen any of these commercials because he only watches the commercial-free channels - the commercials directed at kids are horrible! The Robot Chicken story reminded of me of the couple of times Family Guy has had the Trix rabbit on, one of which was too funny. Though I am deeply ashamed that I have watched this show!

What a wonderful take on the Thanksgiving "feasts". I'm going to eat breakfast now. :)

Well, Lee, you've done it again. Certainly the most insightful and inspired discussion of frozen waffles and breakfast cereal I've seen yet! Happy Thanksgiving - enjoy your breakfast.
