Dear AC Writers,

First, let me begin with a heartfelt "thank you" for comments any of you have left on my articles. We all know the value of comments. They are proof of a page view. They give us a real opportunity to meet other authors. And for many CPs, they're the bread-and-butter of their exposure.

But let's be honest, you probably didn't read all ten pages of my tirade against the post-consumerist communist community depiction in the recent Pixar film, Wall-E, relating it to Adolf Huxley's Brave New World and contrasting it against the Rush's 1981 album Moving Pictures. (Thankfully, I never actually published that, but you get my point.)

Usually, when we're commenting around here, what we're really trying to say is:
  1. Hi!
  2. I gave you a page view.
  3. Would you mind giving me one too?

And that's cool. I like sharing the comment love. I try to always hit authors back. Sometimes I go hunting just so I can find new peeps. It's one of the great things about AC. But instead of saying what we mean, we end up saying stuff like "Great info," "What an interesting topic!" or "(Subject X) always fascinated me!"

In short, we say bullsh**.

And we sorta have to, because otherwise we sound like... well... it doesn't sound favorable.

Tag

So I propose a new system. Let's play comment tag. Instead of writing some BS that you really don't mean, or reading pages of content you aren't really interested in, just write "Tag. You're it." Or something similar would do. It's honest. It isn't disingenuous. And it still allows you to meet new writers.

Will this catch on? Maybe not. But I'm going to give it a shot. If you get a "Tag" from me, please pass it along. Pass it forward if you like. Tag someone else. Tag your buddy. Or tag a stranger. Everyone is fair game.

Well, I'm off to spread the comment love. Be prepared to get tagged.

(In this game, tagbacks are always fair.)

You tagged me, so I came to skim your article. LOL!

Exactly! So you should send them a link here too so they know. :D (Actually, I was thinking that if it became commonplace, no explanation would be needed.)

Well here's a tag! But I DID read your piece. It's a unique topic, and no, I'm not just saying that so it sounds favorable. I agree that many people leave comments that say something generic, but who doesn't? A lot of times I personally read articles, but don't have a lot of time in my busy schedule to sit down and write a long thought-out response like this. Sometimes I just leave a smiley face to say "I read your article, just so you know, and I liked it, but don't have time to get into what I think of it, or I don't know anything about the topic except what I read." We'd all like a comment/page view in return, but that isn't always the intention of leaving someone something. So, perhaps a "tag, you're it" is a great idea. I think it may confuse some people who haven't read your article, though.

Yes, the idea is NOT to replace thoughtful comments or questions (like most I've been blessed with here). In fact, "tag" is intended to encourage legit comments and reduce "i'm stopping by but haven't really read anything" comments down to 3 letters.

tag back to you...but I want to say I do read, or skim most of the articles here if they aren't way too long....I was very frustrated this week when I couldn't comment on anything...

Tagging is an ok thing but I agree with Cahotek, comments could lead to other stuf, further discussion and insight. If indeed the comments are authentic. By the way I did read yur article, if I leave a comment then I read it!!!!!!!!! But you what TAGGED you back!!!!

Tagging back !........however, I did read this one and found it interesting !

Posted on 07/23/2008 at 7:07:43 AM

Is this what they mean by "viral" on the internet? ;)

Tagback! I've actually read the articles I commented on. Do you mean I've been doing it all wrong?

Posted on 07/22/2008 at 8:07:09 PM

TAG--(I figured it out!)

Posted on 07/22/2008 at 7:07:21 PM

So...like...I don't get it. Am I supposed to read the articles or not?

Posted on 07/22/2008 at 6:07:20 PM

Your point is well-expressed and well-taken, Matthew. You're proposal motivated me to leave a comment!

HAHAHHA- I agree with you about some of the comments I receive being just a way of someone showing me that they were there, instead of actually showing that they read my article. . . of course, I am guilty of doing the same! TAG YOU'RE IT!
