What is known as a dental abscess is an abscess (a localized collection of pus) is caused either by an infection of the gum, mouth or surrounding area, or by the death of a nerve (which is normally also due to an infection either from a cavity or some other condition.) In response to the abscess, a tooth or gum may feel tender, or experience swelling. A tooth abscess is the result of an infection that occurs in the center of the tooth. A person with a dental abscess may experience these additional symptoms: a toothache which may include stabbing, throbbing or aching pain; sensitivity in the teeth; pain when chewing or eating; breath odor; fever; swollen glands on either side of the neck; other swelling or discomfort in the mouth, jaw, or neck.
Most dental abscesses are discovered when an individual consults a dentist in response to the pain or other symptoms. The dentist will perform an examination to identify the location and, potentially, the cause of the abscess. While dental abscesses used to be a major concern, they are now very treatable. The dentist will strive to treat any infection, preserve the tooth or teeth, and prevent any additional complications that could arise.
If an infection in present, antibiotics will be prescribed. Additionally, pain relief may be recommended to help individuals cope with the pain while the condition is being treated. If the abscess is associated with a tooth, a dentist may suggest root canal therapy in order to preserve the tooth. During a root canal, the center of the tooth, including the nerve and pulpy center, is scooped out, along with any part of the tooth that may be decayed. The root and surface of the tooth remain in place. The hollow tooth is then filled and repaired. Additionally, a crown may be placed over the tooth.
