Emotions strongly influence our decision-making. For many adults, the imbalance of emotional health often leads to poor decisions. It is these poor decisions that often lead to family strain, divorce, financial instability and even unemployment. If you have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, it is important to understand how your emotions may play a key role in your decision making and then learning to defer important decision making until your psychological state is improved.

One area in which many adults struggle with decision making is that associated with online gambling. For adults who live with depression and anxiety, access to online resources is quite common as it provides an avenue by which focus is deterred to other forms of entertainment. But, for these same adults, access to online gambling can become not only entertaining but lead to financial distress due to poor decision making skills. The core of the complication between online gambling and the presence of anxiety and depression seems to lie in the positive reinforcement of the pleasure pathway found in the brain. This is the same area that is also stimulated in most other addictive behaviors, including drug addiction.

So, how do we find balance in our lives? First, if you know that you are living with a mental health complication, it will be important to continue seeking treatment that will include both a therapy and use of medications. Recognize that your mental health may lead to abnormal decision making and ask another individual to assist in managing some of the decisions you are making in your life. This person may be able to provide guidance, balance and even provide actual service by managing your finances and other physical needs until mental health is balanced again.
