It is common knowledge that parks are great places to find coins and jewelry with a metal detector, but these are places people with metal detectors commonly search. The really good finds that were once several inches below the ground are more than likely long since gone. Public parks are ideal places for finding modern day coins and other metal items with a metal detector, but really old coins and old treasures are not usually found in public parks these days.

The following information provides tips on the best places to find old money and jewelry with a metal detector. Some of these locations are public places, and other areas are off the beaten path. Consider these places to find old money and jewelry with a metal detector, and with permission from the property owner, you just might find something far older and far more valuable than you ever imagined finding.

Old Homesteads

Before getting out the metal detector, seek out old homesteads by searching for areas where trees were planted in the shape of a yard-size rectangle or square. The open area just might have been the location of a long forgotten home. If no traces of a home exist, chances are a few unobvious telltale clues still remain. Depressions in the ground are sometimes still visible in the area of an old home, and old brick or stone chimneys or partial foundations often remain long after a home has completely deteriorated. The entire area could be a treasure trove of valuables, but certain locations just might hold the mother load that can be found with a little ingenuity and the help of a metal detector.

Well worn trails to outhouses long since gone are one of the best places to find old money and jewelry using a metal detector. Look for a well worn trail leading to an outhouse that no longer exists by searching for the depression of a path. Money, jewelry, and other valuables were sometimes lost on the way to and from the outhouse, and an old outhouse trail could be well worth searching with a metal detector.

My boys used to love tooling around the yard with a metal detector since we live in an old homestead ~ it was amazing the types of things they would find, including old metal toys. Great suggestions for those of us who like hunting for buried treasure :)

We have a metal detector, but would never have thought of looking for old homesteads. Sounds like fun, and now I know what to look for.
