Alonzo Mourning is probably best known as a dominant big man who has spent nearly two decades mostly for the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets in his early days. He came out of that linage of Georgetown big men of Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutumbo. The memory that he may be most noted for oddly enough is the fact that former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy was literally hanging on to his ankle during a brawl in Madison Square Garden in a very rough and tumble playoff series. I don't think that as somewhat humorous as the moment now is looking back that Alonzo Mourning would like to be known for that.

I would suspect that Alonzo would like to be known as a Christian, a family man and a person who just generally cares about the common good. Alonzo is a person who through his faith and the support of his family and friends battle back from a rare life threatening kidney disease Focal Glomerusclerosis that almost took the life of fellow NBA player Sean Elliott. By coming back from this disease Alonzo hoped to inspire other folks that just because life throws you challenges doesn't mean you can't live life to a similar level that you did before you took on those obstacles. After coming back from the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in 2000 was when Alonzo realized that he had and he realized after the ordeal that he had to do more to help the world around him to live what he felt was a truly meaningful life. He raised two million to fight the disease and spoke out about the importance of organ donation. Fighting kidney disease is something that Alonzo Mourning dedicated his life to.

Very inspiring story of Alonzo. It's great when a role model goes into Social work, it really draws attention to the cause.
