John Edwards' Affair, Tryst with Rielle Hunter? National Enquirer Claims Proof

But Does the National Enquirer Have Any Real Proof?

It seems the National Enquirer has gone after former North Carolina senator and 2008 Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards again, claiming that they have proof of John Edwards' infidelity, a story the tabloid has been doggedly pursuing since it broke the original story in October

2007 that Edwards was cheating on his wife, Elizabeth. This time, the National Enquirer claims to have caught him in the act. But things are not always what they seem.

Who Is Rielle Hunter?

The original allegations against John Edwards came, as most allegations in the National Enquirer do, through an undisclosed source, a friend of alleged mistress. The mistress? Rielle Hunter, an actress/writer/producer of a documentary short, "Billy Bob and Them," and some campaign webisodes done for the Edwards presidential campaign that got very little airtime. According to the Enquirer's unnamed source, Hunter became Edwards' mistress during the shooting of said webisodes.

Over the ensuing months, the National Enquirer and various other tabloids, blogs, and gossip columns would chronicle the pregnancy of Rielle Hunter, alleged mistress to John Edwards, allegedly the carrier of his "love child." At the same time, as Edwards continued his run for the presidency, he stood by his wife, Elizabeth, who has cancer. Without proof to substantiate the claims, however, the soap opera-ish undercurrent of lust and betrayal became a much ignored subtext of the Edwards campaign story.

What Is The National Enquirer Claiming Now?

The National Enquirer now claims to have proof of John Edwards' meeting with Rielle Hunter under suspicious circumstances. The Enquirer is reporting that one of their reporters, Alan Butterfield witnessed Edwards getting out of a BMW at around 9:45 p.m. on Monday, July 21, and entering the Beverly Hilton, where Hunter had reserved two rooms under an assumed name. When leaving the hotel at 2:40 a.m., Enquirer senior reporter Alexander Hitchen confronted Edwards and asked why he was visiting Hunter (and also if he would confirm he was the father of Hunter's baby).

i think this has legs. he would have denied it and andrew young's wife cheri is accepting of this? no way. they're all being paid off in hush money and god knows edwards has the funds. maybe this is why he ended his scholarship initiative program at that rural school worth $600K's. cause he needs that cash to pay off his friend who is taking the role as father and his mistress. if she's getting 15K/month and his friend is getting?? $30K/month, that's going to add up. and the baby is only 5 months old? so he's got to pay for her for the next 18-22 years. so that's gonna be a lot of dough.

Excellent post. Fox News comes along as an alternative to every God damned, left-wing major network, and they try to silence it. See Fox's ratings? That means that the average citizen does not buy the fact that one network is fake, and all others are the legitimate, honest, non-biased reporters of the "truth." Ever listen to Keith Olberman? What a DIRTBAG! 100% left-wing, anti-conservative, anti-American values, anti-capitalist crap!! I watch Fox and I can say that they include both liberals and conservatives. Sure, O'rielly is popular, but that is due to the "ratings game. ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN are 80% (at least) liberal, with token conservative counterpoint.

But that is misleading, Lauren. They do publish true stories... at times. But they tend to take yellow journalism to an extreme, sometimes to slanderous, libelous, and defamatory extremes. We'll see how this pans out. Now that Fox is running with it, we can bet that ace reporter Sean "I'm Rush Limbaugh's clone but even more moronic" Hannity will be dogging it like a meat-covered bone...

Are you honestly asking if NATIONAL ENQUIRER has proof? I kind of thought everyone knew that this publication never says ANYTHING true...

No, Mr. EPluribus. I tend to lean slighly left (but only on occasion, because I lean right sometimes as well) but I'm an equal opportunity politician basher. Dan Rather screwed up. (Not by attacking Bush; that moron deserves every smackdown aimed at him.) Corroboration is everything in the news business. Half the time, even corroboration and the whole truth and nothing but still gets you nowhere. Too many spinners out there these days. You gotta wait until all the flying stuff comes through the fan and hope what's left is legible. Still might be crap, though...

"Faux News"? Oh, that's a good one, Saul. Come up with that all yourself? Just guessing you trust(ed) the word of proven "faux" reporting by discredited and former CBS anchor Dan Rather, too. Not to mention all those saintly networks and news outlets who never ever pounce on or over-report stories that make Republicans look bad. ;-)

Well, there you have it, Michael and Bill. If they've got pictures, then let's see them. However, a story from a security guard looking to cash in on an unsubstantiated story (Faux News will say and do anything to make a Demorat look bad) is still suspect. And the pictures will have to be verified as to time and place. But, hey, if they got 'em, they caught him and Mr. Edwards has some 'splainin' to do...

Good stuff, D Lombardy. I knew this story was just too vague to be valid. Doesn't mean Edwards is innocent, but it does mean that Butterfield's lack of a picture (and the lack of a paparazzi picture -- c'mon, they were outside the Beverly Hilton and no paparazzi got a shot of Edwards getting out of a BMW? What bull...) and his lack of quotes from the hotel's guests is quite suspect...

You are right I just read the story at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,391426,00.html And from what I get out of it they even have pictures.
