Could there be a possibility of the military draft being put back into effect in the US? If it is up to Rep. Charles Rangel of New York then the answer would be yes. Rangel is a Democrat who will probably head the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and says he is going to propose a new military draft. He believes that reinstating the military draft would help strengthen the US military and keep us prepared for any future military actions in Iraq, Iran and North Korea. Rangel later told reporters "There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way."

The Selective Service System says that they are ready and able to respond to any crisis that would involve the need of a military draft. The also said that they could have everything ready in 193 days. This number is based off the more than 15 million names from the US that are eligible and registered for the Selective Service, which is required by law for all men between the ages of 18 and 26 to be registered.

However, it seems that Rep. Charles Rangel does not have a lot of support in trying to implement the military draft again, which has not been used since 1973 when the US went to an all volunteer military. Incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House Democratic Party will not support Rep. Rangel in his effort to re-establish the military draft. Also, this is not the first time Rangel has tried to push the draft. He proposed the draft just before the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and again earlier this year.

Takeaways
  • As of right now there is not enough support to reinstate the military draft.
  • Rep. Charles Rangel does not have the support of his fellow Democrats on this issue.
  • As long as the Volunteer military is working there is NO need for the draft!

i understand congressman rangels attack tword the draft just to keep us from war. and in this country the draft is highly frowned upon. it is un american to force people to fight, and how the heck is the military going to come up with the money to house, feed, train, transport, and pay all these new recruites that would be comming in? it would run our economy into the grouhd

the draft is a terrible idea people that don't want to fight shouldnt have to.Also that is dumb to think all americans should have to enlist going out of college they should be able to get a job in the field they studied.

I think it would do wonders lower crime and give all young men selfrespect to serve for at least 2 years but when drafted give them a choice of what branch to go in

I disagree with the draft. Being a former US Army officer, the draft would serve little purpose in an organization (yes, the US military forces) of the US.

of course people are not going to want the draft back, but how many times can we send the same guys back overseas!

How would the government ever determine guidelines for a new draft? Will women and new immigrants be required to sign up? After all, we're in the land of equal opportunity and equal rights for all. Supposedly, there is no discrimination.

I believe all male americans should be required to enlist immediately upon graduating high school (if not going to college)or college for at least two years. No, I'm not a communist by any means but I served my country and believe that all should do something for the good of our country.

in response to the person who said, "the draft is a good idea for everyone," why on earth would you want the draft to be reinstated? like anti-war said below me, you shouldn't force people to fight for what they don't believe in. And what about all the wives and family of the possible guys being drafted?? My husband is in the exact age category to be drafted. That is the last thing I want.

Forcing people to fight against their will is wrong and will only serve to distabalize the military further. It's also far too expensive.

If the current administration is telling the truth and we are in fight that must be won. Clearly; we would need to create a draft for the future of the nation. The only thing clear to me is that the actions do not match the rhetoric.
