This simple Christmas tree garland is made out of gum drops and the perfect craft for kids to make over their Christmas break. Check out your local dollar store for bags of inexpensive gum drops. This will save you a lot of money, since you will need quite a few gum drops to make a garland long enough to wrap around your Christmas tree!

The gumdrops will slowly harden as they are exposed to the air. The great thing about using gumdrops is that they retain their original color and shrink very little, so basically, they will look the same for years. To store them after you take your Christmas tree down though I recommend placing the gumdrop garland in its own plastic air tight box. This will keep any critters that may smell the sugar in storage area away.

To Make a Gum Drop Christmas Tree Garland You Will Need:

Twine or fishing line (50 feet)
Tapestry Needle (metal or plastic)
Gum Drops (lots!)

Fishing line is perfect to make this simple gum drop Christmas tree garland. It will not age the way twine will very the years. Also, it can be exposed to the moisture in the gumdrops with no problem. If you only have twine, though, it should last for quite a while.

Now, go ahead and insert your fishing line or twine through the tapestry needle. Insert the needle through one gumdrop and push it all the way to the end of your twine. Tie the twine around the gumdrop in a knot, but do not pull so tight that you cut the gum drop in half. You could also attach a button at the end to hold the gum drops on.

Tip: Work your garland in pieces. Use four foot pieces of twine or fishing line, and then tie them together to make a large fifty foot long Christmas tree garland for the finished product.

Now, start slowly stringing you gum drops onto the twine. Always try to insert the tapestry needle through the center of the gum drop.

You can use your gumdrops to create all kinds of different patterns on your Christmas tree garland.

I love to use all white gum drops and then every tenth gumdrop, have a red gum drop. This gives an elegant and finished look to the homemade Christmas tree garland.
