Could Your Kitchen Granite Countertops Give You Cancer?

Is There a Health Hazard to Granite?

On July 24, 2008, the New York Times Online had a story about a granite kitchen countertop emitting higher than normal dosages of radiation at Lynn Sugarman's home in Teaneck, N.J. Popularity for
granite kitchen tops have grown over the years - and with that so have reports of "hot" granite kitchen tops, primarily from Brazil and Namibia.

Two years ago, my husband and I refurbished our kitchen and bought beautiful granite that originated from Brazil, yet processed through Italy. So, this especially caught our eyes because our granite was from Brazil.

According to the story with Lynn Sugarman, two years ago she decided to do a routine radon gas inspection in her home. Radon gas is a radioactive gas that is said to cause lung cancer. She called a radon and mitigation technician to come out and use a Geiger counter within her home. He went room to room, until he was stopped dead in his tracks around her granite kitchen countertops. His Geiger counter was showing 10 times the amount of radiation compared to other parts of her home. Once she found this out, the next day she ripped the granite kitchen tops out of her home and sent it immediately to her local Department of Health for further analysis.

According to Stanley Liebert, the technician who took the radiation measurement from Lynn Sugarman's home, he says not all granite is dangerous. Nevertheless, he goes on to say, "But I've seen a few that might heat up your Cheerios a little."

According to the E.P.A., they recommend to take action if radon gas levels in a home which exceeds 4 picocuries per liter of air which is equivalent to smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day.

Best keep looking for info on this topic rather than believe the stone industry. Way too much money at risk, plus the have sucessfully covered this up for the past 14 years. They can't tell the truth, so they keep digging the hole deeper. If this was a non issue, neither the CRCPD (state radiation officials) nor AARST (radon scientists) would have committees seting maximum allowable radiation/radon levels for stones and measurement protocols. ANSI and ASME are also looking into the controversy for their organizations. On the radon issue, we have a full scale radon test going currently, over 20 pCi/L so far from only 36square feet of granite in a 96 square foot room. That is like smoking 2 1/2 packs a day, http://forum.solidsurfacealliance.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=98ST We have a lot of info on the topics available. forum.solidsurfacealliance.org solidsurfacealliance.org/blog solidsurfacealliance.org

Excellent reporting! I hadn't heard about this, but then again what doesn't have a chance of causing cancer nowadays.

Good info E.Harmon..to know...but my husband worked for E.P.A..and I guess we don't put our trust in them..no more than the F.D.A. LOL!..i personally will still have ours tested..this is like the odds being hit by lightening..yet, if you live in Florida like I do..odds increase than living in Illinois...but it's good to know what you did..thanks

Oh, the EPA also said that the levels of radon in granite are similar to what would be found in cinder blocks and bricks.

My mother in law informed me about this. I did some of my own research and the EPA has issued new statements noting that granite counter tops pose no significant health risk. I do have a free radon test kit from my local health department. I haven't used it yet. It takes a long time to collect the info. But we don't have granite anyway! Great reporting.

A little scary considering we have granite in our kitchen. Thanks for the info!

I read about this earlier. Great coverage of the topic! Very scary... it makes you wonder if there are other things that you would never think of that could give you cancer.
