List of Portuguese Speaking Countries

While Portuguese doesn't have the same international prominence as English or French, it is spoken in a fairly substantial number of countries.

EUROPE

Andorra: Portuguese is one of the languages spoken in Andorra, a small nation in southern Europe. About ten percent of Andorra's population is Portuguese.

Gibraltar: Some of Gibraltar's small population (about 28,000 people) speaks this language, although the official language is English.

Portugal: Located in southern Europe, bordering Spain and along the Atlantic Ocean. During its period of colonialism, it spread Portuguese to several other nations, mostly in Africa.

WESTERN HEMISPHERE

Brazil: A former Portuguese colony, Brazil is Latin America's largest nation. Other languages of European origin are also spoken there.

Bermuda: Some residents of Bermuda, a small Atlantic island in North America, speak this language.

AFRICA

Angola: Another former Portuguese colony, Angola is located in southwestern Africa. Native languages are also spoken there.

Cape Verde: A group of islands off the west coast of Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean.

Mozambique: Portuguese is Mozambique's official language, but the majority of its people speak other non-European languages.

Guinea-Bissau: Portuguese is the official language of Guinea-Bissau, a former colony of Portugal located in western Africa. Native African languages are also spoken there. Guinea-Bissau should not be confused with the larger neighboring country of Guinea (a.k.a. Guinea-Conakry), where French is spoken.

Sao Tome & Principe: Like Cape Verde, a group of islands near western Africa. Portuguese is the official language.

ASIA

East Timor: One of Portugal's more distant former colonies, East Timor has Portuguese as one of its official languages. However, many other native and European languages are spoken as well.

There are also some other nations, such as the island of Jersey, where a small percentage of the population speaks this language. Some languages which are a mix of it and another language exist as well.
