While many people view credit cards as being a way to buy items and luxuries that you really can't afford, for a lot of others, it can bridge the gap when unexpected financial circumstances come their way.

It is certainly true that a small percentage of people are out of control with their credit cards. They get a new card with a $5,000 credit limit and literally go wild with it. They create their own financial mess.

For the vast majority of people though, financial problems come at them due to circumstances they have no control over. In fact, most Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Anything unexpected can prove disastrous. This is where a credit card can become an asset.

A good example of this is medical expenses. Even with health insurance any kind of medical procedure can be very costly. A credit card can help in making payments until you can get on your feet.

Another example is through a job loss. As more and more companies are merging or cutting back costs, thousands of people lose their jobs every month. Without a regular paycheck these people will often use their credit card to help with everyday expenses until they find another job. Without the help a credit card gives in this situation, the outlook would be grim.

Finally, a divorce happens all too often, many times without the other spouse even knowing its coming. This leaves them unprepared and with tremendous financial difficulties. Just making ends meet can be an overwhelming challenge. Again, a credit card can help in meeting those needs until you can get yourself in a better financial position.

When tough times like this come your way, many times you have no choice but to build up credit card debt. It can often come down to the choice of putting food on the table, gas in the car, and clothes on the kids.
