Sun Appliances & Electronics in Valparaiso, Indiana: A Customer Service Experience

Selecting a refrigerator can be somewhat confusing - unless money is no object. When my husband and I began searching for a refrigerator to replace a double-door model that was far too small, we visited a number of stores in Valparaiso Indiana and the surrounding

area. From Home Depot to smaller privately owned appliance stores, we stopped at them all. One of the appliance stores had moved from an older part of town to a busy section of U.S. Highway 30, but surprisingly it was closed on a Saturday afternoon. While driving to the grocery store before heading home, we discovered another appliance store in Valparaiso Indiana. Sun Appliances & Electronics was open, and we decided to see what they had to offer. Although the staff was kind and helpful at the time of our visit, we would later discover that stopping was not in our best interest. Customer service and satisfaction is greatly lacking these days, and this lack of customer care reaches far beyond larger stores in the Valparaiso Indiana area.

Finding a Bargain at Sun Appliances & Electronics in Valparaiso, Indiana

The selection at Sun Appliances & Electronics in Valparaiso Indiana was quite impressive. Home Depot had a large selection - for those who prefer stainless steel, but stainless steel was not what I wanted. I was looking for a black refrigerator, and I found the one I wanted at Sun Appliances & Electronics. The model I found was a closeout item, and it was less than $600, not including tax and delivery. I was thrilled to have found this bargain with the assistance of a kind and helpful female employee, and although the refrigerator was on sale, I never thought it would arrive in less than acceptable condition. Most of all, I never thought that a problem brought to their attention would be ignored.

Now. Where was I offered money? I have kept ALL of the emails complete with Sun Appliance's personal store signature. People never like negative reviews, but that's too bad. Like I said, it's ALL true. This was based on MY experience.

Continued... Here is a copy of the mail I sent to the manager, and his reply.Hi ****, I appreciate your offer to come out and correct the scratches, but I ended up buying polish and taking care of the majority of the problem shortly after they were noticed. I realize the sides can't be corrected, and that is really the worst of it. I keep those areas covered with refrigerator magnets. I still appreciate your effort, and I've updated my comments. Reply from Manager: Ok if you need anything please call me.

Continued.... Should I have waited months for a call-back after delivery? Stop making excuses once and for all. The facts are the facts. This happened. I saved the all of the emails from management, and NEVER was I offered money.

Jim and John: Sun Appliances NEVER offered money for my trouble! Where are you getting this information? I would have graciously accepted a discount because of the damage, but my concern was ignored and excuses were made after delivery. My cell phone number and my husband's cell phone number NEVER changed, and I am STILL living in the home where the refrigerator was delivered. When and where did I say I moved? Neither of you know what you are talking about. I stand by EVERYTHING I have said, and it makes sense IF you read it completely. Maybe former management was bad. Read my comments below as well. New management contacted me - months and months after the fact - after I repaired the scratches myself. The waves in the sides cannot be fixed, and I told the new manager. I was NOT offered money. I would have taken it. My original phone number DID NOT change immediately after purchase. At the time of purchase before I fixed the scratches, no one cared. Period. You have a nice day as well.

NEW UPDATE - The store is under new management, and the manager is very sorry I had this experience. I wrote back, and I am waiting to hear back from him once again. I am VERY impressed that I was contacted. It means a lot to me, and I know it means a lot to anyone looking for a good place to buy appliances. I am not an unforgiving person, and I am willing to give new managment a chance. I have worked in retail, and caring management can make all of the difference in the world.

Guess what? I NEVER heard back from them. It's no surprise. That's how customer service seems to be these days - non-existant. I'll never buy anything there again. If they had made some attempt to make it right I would have gone back. Now I know I could never count on receiving my purchases in acceptable condition. In a way I regret not refusing the item upon delivery, but I needed a refrigerator right away, and I thought they would try to make it right. All I can say is, never again. I hope anyone searching for a phone number or appliances in that area will see this first. Everything I said is true.

I went to Valpo my freshman year. I ran cross-country and track but rarely ventured in to town . . . except on runs.

I'm so sorry you had to go through all that, but in the end you've helped out so many others. :)

Now THIS is a super consumer article! Your own experience, detailed. I hope you kept phone records, etc. I find it very useful in getting a prompt response, IF one is going to come along at all.
