I lived much of my early life in Oklahoma and Kansas; an area which is known as Tornado Alley by many. Consequently, I've lived through my share of bad storms and even an impending tornado or two. This poem is about one of those instances.

I feel the walls closing in on me
Sucking out the air I need to breathe.
The darkness is terrifying
And yet no cry escapes my lips.

I hear the wind beating at the door;
The sound of a freight train closing in.
I wait for it to overtake me;
Sending the house down around me.

The lightning and thunder continue
As if to prove their dominance.
No one escapes Mother Nature
Once she has unleashed her full wrath.

I fill both my heart and soul with prayer.
If this is my time, I'll be ready
Having confessed my transgressions
And asked for the Lord's forgiveness.

In return, I feel a certain calmness
As though I was wrapped in loving arms.
I know that nothing will hurt me
It isn't yet my time to go.

Glad you are safe.. Tornados are some scary stuff.. I have watched on take the roof off a barn less then a quarter mile from our home one time and then another time totally lift a house up off it's fundation only leaving the toliet on ground level remaining only a block from our home when we lived in the city!

Really a moving poem! I've been menaced by tornadoes too, but I doubt I could express it as well as you do here. Brava, Charlie!

The imagery here is right on the mark! I've experienced a tornado a few times and can totally relate.

I love thunderstorms but I would not like to live in Tornado Alley. Nicely done.

I like the comparison of the sound to a freight train.
