Out of all the areas my illness kills the joy for-grocery shopping is number one on the top ten list! Just the mere thought of grocery shopping makes me want to crawl into bed and declare myself on a fast! I simply cannot stand grocery stores.

The very bright, awful lights hurt my eyes. The sensory overload of colors, smells and deals, deals, deals drive me nuts! And if I start my day with an ounce of energy, you better believe by the time I drag my buns down to aisle 10, I am pooped and pissed.

Let's face it, it takes a good amount of stamina and great vision, as well as biceps which have not been used in the last five years; to get through a grocery store. No, you are not crazy, lazy or stupid- grocery shopping is hard. Think about it:

1. Make a grocery list (concentrated thinking is not an easy task for many of us)

2. Get to the store and find parking.

3. Pull apart the shopping carts (painful with stiff hand and wrists)

4. Then the actual shopping- up and down the aisles, standing in the deli line and weaving in between carts parked dead smack in front of the meat section.(Whew!)

5. Back in line for the checkout.

6. Stretch and bend to get the groceries back out of the cart. (redundancy).

7. Unpack the bags into the car.

8. Now at home, drag bags back out of the car and lug into the house (blessed be the woman with a strong helpful husband and blessed is the man with a wife not afraid to mess up her manicure.)

9. Unpack the bags.

10. And guess what...back on the shelves and into the refrigerator!

There has to be a better way! So after much thought and self talk, I came up with a few tips and tricks that have been helpful to me.

· Don't shop! I do the majority of my grocery shopping on-line. Check your local grocery shops and see if they have shoppers and delivery services. This saves you a lot of time and energy. Peadpod.com is a great delivery service, that I use, but there are others. Check your local store to see of they have online shopping available.

Great article. I dread the grocery store because it means battling with my children who want me to buy everything they see. . .

I actually like grocery shopping, but I always spend to much money

I loved it when peapod started, I used it for my uncle who was disabled and needed someone to shop for him. Saves lots of time and he can choose exactly what he wants instead of me picking and choosing for him. Great article Christine :)

Thanks for the tips. I would rather clean toilets than go grocery shopping.

Wonderful tips. I too had many years of illness whereas shopping was largely impossible. It isn't now (miracle from above) but I still get worn out from it. Great article.

Yesterday I remembered what fun it is to grocery shop while pregnant. Ugh. Mine's acute, not chronic-thank-god, but I'm with you.

Very good article. My father has problems with his hands and I know how much of a problem it can be when he goes to the store. He can't do the bright lights very well either, but pulling the carts apart when you have little feeling in your hands is hard.

In the Atlanta area, we used to have a grocery delivery company. It was AWESOME! But they went out of business. If you can't use an online grocery delivery, another option would be to hire someone to do this errand for you. I have also heard that you can drop your grocery list off at some grocery stores and just come back and checkout. I read this somewhere, and it wasn't for helping people with pain problems, it was just for saving time! So it wouldn't hurt to ask your local grocery store's manager if their staff could do this for you. It would definitely earn them customer loyalty!

It is a chore for everyone, not just those with limited energy... why not make it easier? ;)

I don't have any physical reason not to shop, but I feel much the same way you do when it comes to the grocery store. They may be trying to make it a bright inviting place to go, but to me it is a chore that must be indured. You have some great tips, that are good for anyone. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback ladies. It is MUCH appreciated. I know that grocery shopping is exhausting for many, but even more tiring for those living with chronic conditions.

Very good article. Many people don't think twice about grocery shopping. When I was recuperating from major surgery and debilitation treatments year ago, there was a period of time when my weekly visit to the grocery store was the big event of my week. The other 6 days were spent resting up from the exertion.

I sure hope you write more like this! Information that intends to improve the quality of life for the disabled and chronically ill is so very much needed. Please continue to share so others who struggle with Lupus and related illnesses may find solutions quickly. Your words of encouragement or validation will also lift your readers sense of worth and self-respect. This article may well ease someone's burden and I, for one, am grateful that you published it.
