Tips for Youth Helper and Assistants in Children's Ministry

You CAN Make a Difference in the Lives of Children!

This following was written with teen helpers in mind, but it really applies to all volunteers who may be new to assisting in Children's Ministry classrooms. Lead teachers, remember that many adult volunteers can become surprisingly shy or confused as to what to do when confronted with a 2 year old. The items below may seem basic or common sense, but even adults can forget the power we all have to make children feel special.

Yes, You CAN!

Remember when you were their age? It's not any different for them. Remember what it was like to look at a teenager and think - Wow, look at them! They are so cool! Well guess what? You are that teenager now!

Have you had a great teacher or friend - one who really cared, one who noticed and liked you, no matter how wild, quiet, shy, or disobedient you were? How did that make you feel? Pretty good, huh?

You now have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children. I'm serious. It's possible that you might be on the verge of positively impacting a child in a way you can't even imagine! You don't have to be an adult to play a major role in a child's life. Remember the principles below as you serve in Children's Ministry and you not only CAN make a difference, you WILL make a difference!

C - Care! Let every thing you do reflect the care and love you have for the children you serve.

A - Act! Don't be afraid to jump in and connect with the kids. Be of service to your lead teachers by asking them if there's anything more you can do. They want you to actively participate. You are valued and capable - not just someone to pour juice or take a child to the bathroom.

N - Notice! Notice every child. Constantly be on the look out for kids that need a little extra attention. Approach a disruptive child and offer to play with them. Take some time with a quiet/shy child. Even if they don't respond - you may still have made a difference just by acknowledging their existance. Give attention to all children not just one or two. Your acceptance is very important to them. Be a Godly model for them to follow!
