Right now, as you read this, you are gaining knowledge and by doing so you accomplish the first and most important thing necessary to ensure that your fishing trip will be safe and fun. Having a safe and fun trip are the two things that define a successful deep-sea fishing trip.

To have that unforgettable deep-sea fishing experience you need to know the following things.

Your Boat and Captain
The ultimate experience is defined by some as having a privately owned fishing boat. That is fine if you happen to know someone with a boat that has invited you to go out with them. Unless you are well seasoned on all aspects of ocean boating and deep sea fishing it is not a good or safe idea to "borrow" a friends boat so that you can go out on your own. That is a recipe for disaster.

If you are no using a private boat you need to make sure you are going to have a captain, boat and crew that are registered with the port or dock starting point that you will depart from. Regardless of which start off point you choose, from San Diego in the far south to Monterey up north do NOT venture out into the ocean with unregistered "boat captains" that will not show you where, with whom they are registered. Your crew will likely be non-American immigrants ( Mexican ) and that is okay but what ever nationality the Captain is make sure they are properly licensed and registered to be taking you out to sea. Discuss with the captain, or the charter office, what type of deep-sea fishing experience you hope to have and take their advice on what type of boat is the best and what options you have. There are several options usually which will be covered later in this article.

The captain of your boat should either have fishing tackle and bait arranged or will advise you where to do so. Make sure this is covered and reviewed before you depart on the trip.
