Free Activities or Places to Enjoy When Visiting Denver

Parks and Special Hidden Surprises Help Make Denver a Fun Destination

Denver has a good number of free, but better yet, fun things to do. Here is my list, as a Denver native, of what the best free things are in the Denver area.

Mile High Proof
Take a walk and visit to the Capitol building of the state of Colorado. Here is the secret. Walk up to the 13th

step of the building and find the plaque in the stair riser. It says. This step located 5,280 feet above sea level. That is one mile high. Get your picture taken sitting on that step to prove you were one mile above sea level.

Window Shopping on 16th Street Mall
Walk all along the multi block 16th Street Mall and window shop in the old Denver department store windows that are still in business. Places like the May D&F and The Denver Dry Goods Store, Cottrell's and many other great places to window shop for free.

Speer Boulevard - Cherry Creek Walk
Walk or hike along Speer Boulevard and the historic Cherry Creek River. This is the river that joins the South Platte near the end of the 16th Street mall. This is where the original city of Denver was set up. The Rocky Mountain newspaper used to literally sit straddling the river so as not to upset the competing residents on either side of the river.

Denver Bike or Jogging Path System
Use your feet or bicycle to enjoy Denver's well maintained jogging and bike path system There are over 50 miles of pathway and it's growing every month.

Aurora History Museum - Alameda Drive
This is a special museum with many old things from the Aurora in the years 1900 - 1950. Free admission. Usually operates on Mon - Saturday.

Littleton Historic Museum - South Gallup Street
This is fun for the kids as it is a living museum that shows what early Denver and Colorado life on a farm was like. There are many things to see and try, such as the blacksmith working and the old school house. Usually free there may be times when special blacksmithing exhibitions are taking place for which an admission would be asked.

Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities - Wadsworth Boulevard
Art galleries and a museum about the city of Arvada. Open and free to the public. Usually open Tuesday - Saturday
