Crohn's was first described by a surgeon who removed a diseased colon in 1904. When similar symptoms and surgery was noted by gastroenterologist Burrill Bernard Crohn the Crohn's disease was classified among gastrointestinal diseases and given his name. However, long before the disease was identified and named by Western medicine, Crohn's-like symptoms were observed in the ancient world and ancient remedies for symptoms and disorders associated with Crohn's disease were widely used. Many ancient Crohn's remedies have been documented throughout history.

Bowel inflammation, cramping, and swelling associated with Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis were treated by ancient Chinese medicine, Indian medicine, and near eastern civilizations such as the Phoenicians and Greeks. Many ancient Crohn's remedies are still used today.

Ancient Crohn's Remedies: Ancient Phoenician Remedies

Hippocrates, the great Greek physician, left written records of much of his work. Hippocrates treated ancient Greeks with a system known as Naturopathy. Naturopathy was based on the bodies need for balanced intake and elimination. Naturopathy appears to have been a logical ancient approach to the symptoms of Crohn's disease. Naturopathy also seems to have been common throughout ancient civilizations of the west and near east. Hippocrates may have adopted many of his treatments from ancient Phoenicians, Egyptians, and other ancient civilizations.

Digestive illness including irritable bowels, constipation, and diarrhea was linked by ancient Greeks and Phoenicians to auto-intoxication. Auto-intoxication is believed to be the body's gradually build up of toxins and poisons in the intestines due to the buildup of fecal material along the colon walls. Toxins get into the bloodstream and also affect other organs of the digestive system, including the liver, kidneys, and spleen.

Takeaways
  • Hippocrates encouraged the importance of diet and proper elimination.
  • Phoenicians and Egyptians used Crohn's treatment methods that may have been adopted by Hippocrates.
  • Ancient Chinese medicine and Aryuveda are still used to treat Crohn's.
