Hit Web Comic "Garfield Minus Garfield" to Be Published in Book Form
Garfield is one of the most famous comic strip cats in the world, having been around for almost 30 years. Garfield has overeaten his way to millions of fans, several animated specials and two live action movies. But what would Garfield be like without
Garfield? Few can imagine Jon Arbuckle and Odie carrying the strip in Garfield's place, but someone did and it is paying off big time. "Garfield Minus Garfield" has been an online sensation for months, and now "Garfield Minus Garfield" will be transferred to book form.
Even without Garfield, the now more depressing adventures of Jon Arbuckle have taken off. The conceit of "Garfield Minus Garfield" is to subtract Garfield from the strips and only have Jon Arbuckle in them. As such, now that it appears Jon Arbuckle is talking to him, he now seems completely insane, sad, depressed, schizophrenic and actually poignant. Jon Arbuckle has always been pathetic, but "Garfield Minus Garfield" takes it to new extremes.
Ballantine Books, which has published Garfield collections since 1980, will publish a joint venture between "Garfield Minus Garfield" and Garfield creator Jim Davis. The book will have side-by-side comparisons between original Garfield strips and their altered "Garfield Minus Garfield" versions.
The "Garfield Minus Garfield" creator, Irishman Dan Walsh, calls "Garfield Minus Garfield" an "even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life." Having launched in February, "Garfield Minus Garfield" became an instant hit, publishing an altered Garfield strip every day.
A sample "Garfield Minus Garfield" strip has Jon Arbuckle saying, "Do you ever get the feeling that you're missing out on a lot of things?" In the original Garfield strip, that would be the setup for Garfield to deliver his usual quips and joke for the day. But in "Garfield Minus Garfield" Garfield isn't there and Jon stays the same as in the original, sad and still. The effect is much different than if Garfield was there.
Walsh will provide the foreword for the "Garfield Minus Garfield" full color book. The book is due to be released in October.
