I am a plus sized woman. Even when I was my thinnest, I still stand about 5'10" tall with a large frame, and that makes shopping for clothing difficult at best. What plus sized women really want is clothing that is stylish and popular, but doesn't accentuate the fact she is a bit outside of standard clothing sizes.

Plus sized women don't need large polka dots and bright floral prints that make them stand out even more than they already do. But it's not easy to find stylish clothing in the larger sizes, or sizes outside of the norm, especially for tall women. I can find plenty of things to fit me size-wise, but pants are almost always too short for me.

Years ago, I worked for a business school, as a career services coordinator, and one of the things I implemented at the school, which had many low-income students seeking to improve their education and income, was a clothing closet to help prepare the students for job interviews and dressing for success in the workplace. It is possible to dress your best, even if you are plus sized, and still look professional, clean, and neat in appearance.

First, larger woman tend to buy clothing that is actually too large for them. I've done this too. You buy the baggy t-shirts that cover up all the 'problem areas' or flowing and full one-piece dresses. Truth is, these types of clothing actually will only make a plus-size woman appear larger and won't accentuate any of the positive figure features she may have.

The better choice would be to buy clothing that is form fitted but not snug. Fitted shirts or button up shirts look better on a plus sized woman than t-shirts or thinner cotton shirts do.

Takeaways
  • Plus sized women should buy clothing that fits properly, not too snug, not too large.
  • Not all plus sized women are built the same, and you should buy clothing that suits your body style.
  • Accentuate your positive features and downplay any negative to look your best.

Very helpful article. This used to be a tremendous problem, but has gotten better in recent years. Still, the info is very helpful.

Great article! Another good item to make women look smaller in the waist is a jacket that comes in at the waist and goes back out at the bottom. I've watched What Not to Wear too many times LOL I'm a plus sized woman in her early 20s and I have an extremely hard time finding clothing for people my age, everything is for people who are much older. There isn't that much more fabric that goes into plus sized clothing yet sometimes it costs up to $5 per item more than the regular stuff does. It's really unfair.

We don't have one of them down here in redneck land... I'll have to see if there's one in Austin or not.

great article! My favorite plus size clothing store is CJ Banks. I swear to you that each and everything I've tried on in that store fits exactly the way I would want it to. Plus, I like their level of customer service. The staff waits on your with a flurish. And on top of the way they care for you while in the store, they neatly wrap your purchases in tissue paper and put them in a good quality shopping bag. Sorry, just love that store so much! LOL!

Yeah! Great piece. I look so much better in form accentuating clothes - I had no idea until a fashion critic helped me learn. I now invest in pieces of classic design, fitted to clear all the curves and disguise the faults. I hope the message gets out there! Big is Beautiful (or at least it can be with a little wisdome).
