Reading like something out of a "Sopranos" episode or a "Godfather" movie, the FBI entered the home of alleged mafia kingpin John "Junior" Gotti, Jr. early Tuesday morning and arrested him on three counts of conspiracy to commit murder. The charges stem from an investigation in Tampa, Florida, WNBC and the Tampa Tribune report, that allegedly involved the Gambino crime family and a drug trafficking ring in New York, New Jersey and Florida. According to the district attorney's office in Tampa, other indictments are involved as well."They just won't leave him alone," Angel Gotti, John Gotti, Jr.'s sister, told Newsday.com. "They want his blood."
John Gotti, Jr., 44, who has been alleged to have been the past head of the Gambino crime family, was arrested in front of his wife and six children at his home in New York. Charles Carnesi, Gotti's lawyer, told the Tampa Tribune that the son of reputed and alleged "godfather" John Gotti was likely headed to Tampa for arraignment and trial. "I got a call from his family this morning. John is in Manhattan being processed right now. They arrested him at his Oyster Bay home. From what I am told, there were a dozen agents and helicopters. They made a real public spectacle out of this."
This is not the first time John "Junior" Gotti, Jr., has had a run-in with federal prosecutors. Three other attempts to put Gotti in prison have failed, ending in hung juries and mistrials. In one attempt, Gotti was prosecuted for the allegedly ordering an attack on Guardian Angels leader, Curtis Sliwa, in 1992. That 2005 trial ended in a mistrial.
As for his father, John Gotti, otherwise known as the "Dapper Don" because of his always appearing in formal custom-made suits, was convicted on the testimony of Sammy "The Bull" Gravano and federal wiretaps and sent away for life in 1992. He died in prison of throat cancer in 2002. Gotti was the reputed head of the Gambino crime family before being convicted, having allegedly become "godfather" through a "hit" on his mafia rivals in 1985.
