You’ve heard of Oxygen bars, how about CO2 bars?
When we think of modern or classical ways in which to relax and unwind, we think of indulging in bottled spirits at social gatherings or even those who risk incarceration by partaking in illegal controlled substances. The image of getting high or getting buzzed is usually accompanied by drinks, cigarettes, pills or the like. But what about gas? Scientists now believe that one of the most famous centers of wisdom and prophecy was fueled and made famous not by the powers of the Gods, paranormal spirits or the muses, but by simple carbon dioxide, CO2 gas.
People from every class made pilgrimages to the Greek temple of Delphi seeking advice from the God Apollo, which was relayed to them by the buzzed female Pythia. Her cryptic ramblings were regarded highly and influenced everything from the outcome of wars to when farmers planted crops.
Simply put, the ancient prophets at Delphi in Greece may have been flying high and long on natural gas. Scientists now think the cause of their altered states of consciousness which provided them with compelling visions of future events which writers chronicled may have been the result of carbon dioxide inhalation.
In the temple of Delphi in ancient Greece, female oracles, called Pythias, dispensed wisdom and even predicted the future. Living a mostly solitary life in the temple and usually of high class or noble birth, the oracles gained the respect and confidence of the people. Perhaps the very nature of their isolated lives, spending most of their days inside the temples played the biggest role. Now research strongly supports there may have been something in the atmosphere there, which enabled them to access higher levels of consciousness or at least it so appeared. In LiveScience.com, Heather Whipps quotes researcher Giuseppe Etiope as saying, "It is possible that…[this was] due just to a deficit of oxygen in the Temple room, where air ventilation was weak and the [carbon dioxide and methane] gas release from the soil was strong."
