Like so many before him, 28-year-old Indian techie Naveen Ningappa from Chitradurga, Karnataka, used the Internet for social purposes as much as for work. Yet, as American authorities allege, when he began communicating with what he believed to be a 12-year-old girl and then allegedly requested a meeting with the supposed child, he got caught up in a sting operation.

The Deccan Herald out of India reports that Naveen Ningappa is now being held in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Pennsylvania prison and is charged - among other things - with solicitation to commit rape. Sent to New Jersey in 2007 by his company for work, the sting operation in which Mr. Ningappa got caught up originated in California.

The bias of the Deccan Herald is somewhat surprising. Referring to Mr. Ningappa as one who is "languishing" in prison -- and thereafter happily reporting that he spends his time playing chess, reading books and watching television -- the paper also asserts that he was forced by the child to meet her at a location in Norristown, Pennsylvania. It is unclear how a mere child with whom the adult Indian techie was conversing would have accomplished this feat. The paper does concede that Mr. Ningappa was indeed voluntarily chatting with the alleged 12-year-old girl online.

Finding the bail of $150,000 and later on $500,000 impossible to afford, Naveen Ningappa expressed to the Herald that he does not believe his public defender to do a good job, but he also is not able to hire his own defense attorney. Mr. Ningappa's father is reportedly rather upset that his son was nabbed for something he did not actually have the chance to commit. The family is planning to meet with Chief Minister Yeddyurappa and hopes that the government will intercede with the United States for the release of their son.

There is some disconnect between the story the Herald reports and the story that Times Now TV publishes in that the latter account stipulates that Mr. Ningappa never actually met with the child but only chatted with her. This fails to explain how he ended up in a sting operation.

The mere fact that a 28 year old man is chatting online with a 12 year old girl should make anyone wonder exactly what is going on in the mind of the man.

I am confused. Are you the same author whose article was prominently featured by AC staff?

You should not be writing on AC

Don't worry desi. She probably lost her job to an Indian techie. So some rant is expected. I never knew some of us Americans avidly read Deccan Herald and specifically look for these. I don't even have time to read New York Times.

Well said, minus factor! You don't approve of paedophiles and you don't approve of entrapment, you think paedophily is evil, and so is police entrapment. Why did you even bother to comment? you know its not like having your cake AND eating it. extreme situations demand extreme measures, for paedophiles, deterrants are necessary, hence these examples. God forbid, if your child is ever mis-treated, will you or will you not pull out all the stops to seek justice? You know, crimes are not something that happen to 'other' people.

@ Carly Hart - While I don't approve of pedophiles (I have a 2 year old daughter), I also WILL NEVER approve of entrapment...under the right circumstances, most people can be guilty of some very serious things. Entrapment is pure evil (as are pedophiles), but it is not a just action for a police force.

My mistake :) I must have missed that it was a police decoy. Still, it makes no matter. He thought he had a date with a 12 yo.

Absolutely horrifying. 28 yo men do not go to meet 12 yo's with protection in their pockets! Regardless of his nationality/ethicity, a creep is a creep. My spouse is from the Norristown area originally and this child could easily belong to someone he knows. I say let him languish in prison. I would imagine that the police will use forensics to obtain any evidence from his computer. Techie or not, unless he wiped that hard drive clean before going on his hot date with a 12 yo, they will likely find things that could be used against him in a court of law.

Something like this demonizes Indians. Please note that such individuals are very very few in number, and most usually grow a few brain cells by the time they learn to go look for jobs on the campus. "techies' straight from the country have a tougher time, because unlike student Indians, they do not get time to familiarize themselves to the new culture, hence cases like Ningappa's make splashes. I am sure no one believes this guy is innocent and is being framed. He hurt himself and he hurt the Indians, which is worse. He cries in his letters to his unlucky father that none of his 'US' friends have helped him look for an attorney, or try to bail him out. I'd be damned if i try to help such a character, next, its half a million $.... he's sooooo screwed. I don't think politicians from India have any say in this case. I can imagine his father paying this chief minister lakhs of rupees, in vain. I hope this serves as a lesson to all the clueless people out there who want to seek nirvana.

Puloma, that HURT southies man! But, I have to agree with you; see, there's a guy who callers himself 'fuckers' here and he just proved our point. He says "In developed countries or society, chicks or dicks in young age itself becoming hot to do anything" . Like the guy who used a thesaurus to reply to puloma says, the indian society's 'prudery' is to blame. contacts between girls ad boys are virtually non existant, for many reasons, and when these socially dysfunctional people come to a place in the US or UK, they begin mis-interpretting people's friendliness for sexual advances. I am a grad student and have to teach biology to a bunch of green kids in college; a 'FOB' south indian aquaintance of mine saw me dole out testpapers one day and the first question he asked was which of those chicks I had 'done it' with. You can see where to problem lies. Indians could be from Mars for all you could care, many are clueless to the culture and customs at the beginning.

Puloma, very elevated and evolved of you to throw parochial jibes. Unfortunate situation this is. A chap locked for a long time to come. Years of investment undone in a moment of weakness. Your act is no different in hue than that of a what has brought Naveen disgrace. Ideally, the chap should just reconcile with the facts, attempt to mitigate the time based on true facts, and serve it out honorably. Ideally, he should force it to trial and claim entrapment. That should atleast put the jury in his favor to the extent of leniancy in terms of some of the allegations, and possibly reduced sentence. As for the problem of fobbies like him misinterpreting the culture and having assumed fantasies of America, let me lay the blame at on the doorstep of our neo-Indian Middle class prudery. And of our great media and assumed cultural superiority of 'our' ways. Naveen's father is bringing more negative attention than doing any good for the case.

This Indian guy should be castrated and made to undergo a sex-change operation. After that, he should be left free to be scavenged by society.

Since it was a sting operation, There would not be an actual 12 year old girl chatting with that guy. Whatever is the case, that guy has screwed up his life, his family and his future. Nobody could have stop this guy if he had gone out on dating with 19-20 year old girl, as it is legal as per the law. However now this guy has broken the law and have to pay the price. It is a shame that he thought of doing it with 12 year old kid.
